Cuba's Interior Ministry said 100,000 people took part in the hour-long march organised by a youth federation. "Young people are taking part in this march to express their desire to stop the attacks on Palestinians," said Cristina Diaz, 22, a physics student at the University of Havana.
Both Israel and Gaza have suffered heavy casualties in the six weeks of fierce fighting. This was the largest pro-Palestinian demonstration in Cuba since the Israel-Hamas conflict began.
Palestinian medical students in Cuba also joined the march. "I am very grateful to the Cuban people and government for always supporting Palestine," said Isaam Aldawodeh, 22, a Palestinian student.
The conflict between the two sides broke out on October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory, killing about 1,200 people and taking 240 civilians hostage. Israel responded with airstrikes and a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip. The fighting between the two sides has left about 16,000 people dead and more than 41,000 injured as of November 23.
