The workshop was organized by the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission in coordination with the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics , the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, and the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations.

Active contribution in the new phase

In his opening speech at the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac, Permanent Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, affirmed that the Party is well aware of the special position and role of literature and arts in the revolutionary cause of the nation and people, and has always paid attention to this important field. Party documents through congresses have emphasized the great role of literature and arts in building new people, nurturing the soul, personality, social ethics, and arousing the aspiration to develop a prosperous and happy country. Our Party always respects and encourages the creative team of artists, while placing high demands on the ideological, humanistic, national and humane qualities in each work. At the National Conference of Artists and Writers in Hanoi on December 30, 2024, General Secretary To Lam emphasized: "The Party, the State, and the people expect and believe in the transformation, strong rise, and positive contributions of the artists and writers in the new revolutionary period."

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac, looking back over the past 50 years, it can be seen that the country's literature and arts have worthily inherited the tradition of a "patriotic and humane literature and arts, closely connected with the people and nation"; at the same time, with the strong support from the idea of innovation, literature and arts have strived to rise up, develop comprehensively, reflect and contribute to realizing the aspiration for national development.

However, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac frankly admitted that contemporary literature and art still lacks works of high ideological and artistic value, commensurate with the stature of the Doi Moi process initiated and led by our Party and the cultural and historical depth of the nation. A part of the creations are still far from reality, following easy tastes, leaning towards commerce and entertainment, lacking political and ideological courage. Besides, there is a clear generation gap among the current artists. The generation of artists who have created works before with rich life experiences and deep thoughts are gradually retreating into the background due to age and health; meanwhile, the young force, although dynamic, creative, quickly approaching new things, lacks depth of experience and solid value orientation.

In the wave of globalization and technology explosion, Vietnamese literature and arts are facing multi-dimensional impacts, both as an opportunity to expand exchanges, absorb the quintessence of human culture, integrate into international culture, and as a great challenge in preserving identity. The problem is to know how to actively exploit the cultural values of ethnic groups and regions in creation; at the same time, proactively and selectively absorb the quintessence of world literature and arts, contributing to creating new values, both of international scope and imbued with the national soul...

At the workshop, delegates focused on analyzing the historical and social context that has impacted the development of Vietnamese literature and arts over the past 50 years; objectively and comprehensively assessing the current state of literature and arts, and proposing specific and practical solutions to develop Vietnamese literature and arts in the new context.

Associate Professor, Dr. Le Thi Ngoc Diep analyzed the changes in public aesthetic tastes and the impacts on Vietnamese culture and arts from 1975 to the present. Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Son pointed out many problems and proposed 4 groups of solutions to perfect policies and guidelines for developing culture and arts in accordance with the creative characteristics and requirements of the times...

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky, Chairman of the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts, emphasized that in the era of information technology explosion and the development of artificial intelligence, the country's cultural and artistic activities need to proactively transfer generations and strongly link industries to meet the needs of the audience and carry out the tasks of a "very important and especially delicate" field...

Promoting the creative potential of artists

Concluding the workshop, Politburo member, Party Central Committee Secretary, Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission Nguyen Trong Nghia said that the Organizing Committee had received 138 presentations from scientists, experts, researchers, leaders and managers in the fields of culture, arts and literature at central and local agencies. The workshop analyzed and evaluated the current situation, affirmed the achieved results; at the same time, pointed out the limitations, inadequacies and issues facing Vietnamese arts and literature over the past 50 years.

From the results of the workshop, comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia requested all levels, sectors, localities, agencies, units, teams of researchers, theorists, critics and artists nationwide to continue to pay attention to and synchronously implement the proposed tasks and solutions. Effectively implement the resolutions and directives of the Party, especially the contents of the upcoming Resolution of the 14th National Congress on culture, literature and arts. Scientists, experts, theorists and critics continue to study and research, more fully identify the laws and trends of movement; especially analyze in depth the difficulties and obstacles and propose solutions to promote the achieved results, continue to build and develop an advanced Vietnamese literature and arts, imbued with national identity, imbued with the spirit of nationalism, democracy, humanity and science.

“In implementation, we need to uphold the courage to protect the truth, protect the right, the good, the beautiful, resolutely fight and criticize the deviant and wrong manifestations in the life of literature and art. Affirm the role of crystallizing, converging and strongly promoting the cultural and ideological traditions of our ancestors. Thoroughly study Marxist literature and art theory, Ho Chi Minh's thought on literature and art, and at the same time effectively absorb the quintessence of human theory in the process of building and perfecting the theoretical system of building literature and art and the value system of Vietnamese literature and art”, Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia emphasized.

Artists and cultural and artistic activists should stick closer to and immerse themselves in the country's vivid reality, promote social responsibility and civic duty, explore and create, constantly expand the scope and depth of their grasp of reality; deeply explain and interpret new and important issues, and strive to create more attractive works that are profound in ideological content and novel in form.

Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia requested that the central and local departments, ministries, branches continue to fully and deeply grasp and effectively implement the Party's resolutions on culture, literature and arts and the important instructions of General Secretary To Lam at the National Conference on Literature and Arts on December 30, 2024. Strengthen propaganda, further raise awareness of the very important position and role of literature and arts, thereby promoting the sense of responsibility, making appropriate decisions, creating motivation for the team of artists to be creative and dedicated.

In the process of institutionalizing the Party's viewpoints and policies into laws, the system of mechanisms and policies must ensure consistency, scientificity, and practicality; the focus is on ensuring creative freedom, improving working conditions, liberating and promoting the creative potential of artists; continuing to build mechanisms for providing information and listening to criticism. Ensuring that artists and writers grasp and absorb the viewpoints, guidelines, and orientations of the Party and the State's policies, thereby strengthening trust, unifying awareness, and joining hands and unanimously implementing them, while promptly planning appropriate and effective mechanisms and policies for creative activities and promoting valuable literary and artistic works to the domestic public and international friends.

Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia emphasized that after the conference, the Organizing Committee and press and media agencies will continue to promote and widely disseminate the achievements of 50 years of Vietnamese literature and arts after the country's reunification in many rich, vivid and modern forms. Introducing to the public typical and outstanding literary and artistic works of the past 50 years, contributing to strongly arousing the spirit of independence, self-confidence, self-reliance, self-reliance, national pride, bringing our country firmly into the new era.
