On the eve of Lunar New Year, Nhe market (Khanh Vinh Yen commune, Can Loc district) - the largest buffalo and cow market in Ha Tinh - is bustling and vibrant with hundreds of people jostling to buy and sell.
From 4am, the road to Nhe market was bustling with groups of carts carrying buffaloes and cows to the market. In a moment, the empty market yard was filled with buffaloes and cows.
The bellowing of buffaloes and cows, the sound of bargaining, the sound of people calling each other... made the whole countryside bustling.
Although the market only meets in the morning, the number of buffaloes and cows at each market session ranges from 200-300. Especially on the days leading up to Lunar New Year, the number of buffaloes and cows coming here is greater than usual.
From early morning, Mr. Ho Phuc Mau transported 4 calves nearly 20km from Ich Hau commune (Loc Ha district) to Nhe market to sell. Mr. Mau said: "Trading buffaloes and cows at Nhe market has been my family's livelihood for decades. Bringing buffaloes and cows here is easier to sell than other places because Nhe market has a long tradition of buying and selling livestock."
When buffaloes and cows arrive at the market, they are tied to tree roots and trailers, waiting for customers to come and see and bargain.
Buyers and sellers gathered in groups, negotiating prices. The buying and selling took place quickly and happily.
Unlike other markets, in this market, buyers pay for buffaloes and cows by clapping their hands, each time they pay is a clap.
After each successful transaction, the buyer and seller exchange cash right at the market.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (residing in Tung Loc commune) shared: “ Today I bought 2 calves, each worth nearly 8 million VND, to take care of until the price is right and then sell them. At Nhe market, there are many buffaloes and cows, it is easy to choose beautiful ones, the buying and selling process is fast, so it attracts many traders as well as people here .”
The cows are loaded onto trucks by their owners to be taken home. At least five trucks are parked at the market each day to take the cows and buffaloes home to be cared for or sold to others.
Nhe Market is currently the largest buffalo and cow market in Ha Tinh. Each market session gathers hundreds of buffalo and cows from different regions. The market is held on the 2nd, 7th, 12th, 17th, 22nd, 27th (lunar calendar) of each month. Each session is from 4am to about 10am.
Some people come to the market to buy and sell, but others just come to watch for fun. Because of this unique feature, Nhe market is increasingly sought after by many people. Over time, the market has changed with the pace of modern life but still retains the rustic, simple features of a traditional market.
