At 4:30 p.m. today (August 3), Vietnam's number 1 swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang will compete in the 1,500m freestyle event at the 2024 Paris Olympics with the goal of surpassing himself.
In the previous 800m freestyle event, the 2000-born swimmer from Quang Binh, Huy Hoang, did not perform as expected when his performance declined, ranking only 28th out of 32 athletes participating in the qualifying round and stopping early. He admitted that he did not compete well, despite his mental preparation and international competition experience, he was still overwhelmed when competing against a very strong opponent.

Coach Nguyen Hoang Vu also said that in the 800m freestyle event, Nguyen Huy Hoang has not yet achieved his best performance. He was encouraged to relieve pressure and put his highest determination into the final event, the 1,500m freestyle. This is the event in which Huy Hoang achieved his best result with a time of 14 minutes 58 seconds 14 5 years ago. After that, he could not repeat this achievement and the best result that this swimmer has recently achieved is 15 minutes 04 seconds 06 (at the 19th ASIAD in 2023). His goal at the Paris Olympics this time is to surpass his achievement at the 19th ASIAD, but that is a huge challenge. In the qualifying round of the 1,500m freestyle event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, there are 27 athletes competing. Nguyen Huy Hoang will compete in the first round with 2 opponents Falcon Rodolfo (Cuba), Markos Dimitrios (Greece) while the remaining 3 rounds will have 8 athletes each. Competing with 2 opponents with worse performance parameters will help Huy Hoang not be "overwhelmed" like when competing in the 800m freestyle qualifying round before. This helps him somewhat feel comfortable mentally, promising to have positive performance parameters. This event only takes the 8 athletes with the best performance parameters to the final. It is difficult to demand more from Nguyen Huy Hoang because he has just suffered an injury after the 19th ASIAD and is showing signs of slowing down when he turns 24. The fact that the Quang Binh swimmer has won an official ticket to the Olympics for the second time in a row is a commendable effort, encouraging him to continue contributing to Vietnamese sports.
