It is no coincidence that Vovinam at the 32nd SEA Games has many events, just behind the 3 Olympic events: Athletics (47), Swimming (40), Wrestling (30). The first reason is that Vovinam's vitality has become increasingly strong, with many countries in the region practicing and competing. If we count from the 2011 SEA Games when Vovinam first appeared in Indonesia with 14 events, then in 2013 in Myanmar with 18 events, and the third time in Hanoi last year with 15 events, the fact that the host Cambodia organized double the number of events is an affirmation that our martial art has a very significant position on the regional map.

Another reason is the correct strategy of the Sports and Physical Training Department and the Vietnam Vovinam Federation when we accept not to capture medals at all costs to eliminate the movement. Everyone knows that Vovinam is the strength of the Vietnamese people, just like Indonesia's Pencak Silat, Thailand's Muay Thai, and the Philippines' Arnis. If the countries that produced these martial arts just capture the achievements at any congress, there will never be many other countries participating. That will of course be disadvantageous for the movement. Therefore, Vovinam in the early stages of opening up needs to find "allies", needs support and creates opportunities for this martial art to penetrate more countries than competing for medals, and the best way is to encourage many countries to compete in performance events and only "frame" 8 combat events.

The host country Cambodia and some other countries also saw this "strategy" of the Vietnam Vovinam Federation, so they pushed the organization of 21 performance events and only 8 combat events. Partly because at the 31st SEA Games Cambodia won 10 medals of all kinds in the performance event, they had the motivation to increase the number of competition events. On the other hand, in the performance event, the judges' scoring, in addition to professional factors, is inevitably influenced by emotions, so organizing many performance events will increase the chance of achieving results. Therefore, it is not surprising that Vietnam's gold medals in recent days were mainly in the combat event because the scores will be clear due to the moves being scored, while in the performance event, the achievements of Vietnamese martial artists were only at an acceptable level.

This result of course followed the strategy that Vovinam wanted. We may not have won the overall championship, and even had fewer gold medals than the host Cambodia. But that does not matter, it does not lose the strength of Vietnamese Vovinam. On the contrary, taking a step back like that is the right move to spread the image of Vovinam more strongly, attract more people and create a stronger appeal for long-term development.
