No one wants to sing badly or sing with mistakes.

Nguyen Ba Phu Quy chose the academic path to help many students shine on the music stage. He is known as a "cool" vocal coach, having taught famous singers such as Dat G, Osad, Nguyen Ha, Wren Evans... and the controversial singer Chi Pu.

No regrets about teaching

Coming out of many prestigious music competitions but not pursuing a singing career but instead stepping back to teaching vocal music. Where did Nguyen Ba Phu Quy get involved with such a unique job?

I was born and raised in a family with a tradition of teaching, so my current job is not unfamiliar. This was my choice from the beginning, not a step back.

When I was a young singer, I participated in many competitions and set a goal to gain a lot of experience in singing and stage practice so that I could become a vocal coach in the future. I think that to become a vocal coach, professional knowledge is still not enough to help young people follow a professional music career.

I have been involved in teaching since 2010, after winning first prize in the National Student Singing Star. At that time, I was trusted by Mr. Nam Khanh and was given the first students to teach.

At first, I only taught short courses at the centers, so I didn't want to accept them as students. Later, when I opened my own class, I dared to consider them as my students. What they have in common is that they are dedicated, responsible, and progressive artists.

Among the first students, there were musician Do Hieu, musician Mew Amazing, Nguyen Ha, Evy, Du Uyen... I think they all have certain positions in the public's heart.

Have you ever regretted that, with your singing voice and your role as a music producer, if you had a good crew, the name Nguyen Ba Phu Quy would have been much more famous than if you had contributed silently, behind the scenes?

As I shared, becoming a teacher was my initial choice and goal, so I have no regrets.

In fact, in 5 years of professional singing, I have been trained and have a professional team with a full manager, media representative, personal makeup artist, personal stylist, personal studio, personal photographer and a personal music director. And I myself also feel that a quiet life of dedication is more suitable.

But will there be a day when he will return to singing?

At this time, I am making a personal album. First of all, I want to have a well-made product as a souvenir. Partly, I also hope that through my album, I want to convey motivation and passion to students.

But my closest and biggest goal is still to carry out the series Sit Down and Talk and Sleep, My Child as a host and producer. This is a new experience, very interesting and also quite challenging for me.

I hope that through this series of programs, I will somehow contribute more motivation to young artists and their parents, through the hidden corners of artists when working and living with the music profession.

In addition, I will also conduct a series of workshops on contemporary music, through which participants will understand more and understand music correctly.

Consider singing as food.

In the flow of market music, when cover phenomena, TikTok singers... appear more and more, do you think it is difficult to find/train a truly talented singer?

When you come to me, I will organize an aptitude test based on a process I have prepared for all of you, so I don't see many obstacles. If all teachers have a process to test students, I am sure that the input will be controlled and the output will be much better.

I have two beliefs about singing: "learn to listen to music before learning to sing" and "learn to sing so that when you put down the mic, you can still be a singer."

Learning to listen to music is learning to recognize beauty and ugliness, right and wrong, and to distinguish techniques… thereby helping singers to position themselves in singing. Learning to sing so that when you put down the mic you can still be a singer is about the singer’s inner self.

Once you have determined that you are a singer, even without any support, you can still sing confidently. To be like that, you can do nothing but cultivate to gain real ability.

But the reality is, anyone can become a singer, regardless of their controversial voice. Does it make you sad to witness this reality?

Absolutely not. That is the inevitable development, not only in Vietnam but in every country. That urges educators and those in charge of organization and management to be more strict and selective.

As for the singers themselves, they need to be more updated, more serious, more determined and more professional.

Not only singers but also teachers like me are the same. Many music classes today still teach with the outdated model of one teacher - one piano - one student.

While there are so many educational support tools to update now, if you don't keep up with the times, you will be eliminated, that's inevitable.

Is that why many young singers, despite having many hits, are facing great pressure from public opinion regarding their singing? In your opinion, is there something wrong with the way these young artists learn to sing or is public opinion too harsh?

There is instability. But the question is, do they want money, are they trying to change?

No one wants to sing badly or sing with mistakes, but we should accept those who know their mistakes, know how to correct them, are progressive, and are eager to learn to change and develop themselves. Suggestions are always better than criticism. Everyone should be strict with music but not too harsh.

Let's think of singing as food. If it doesn't suit your taste, someone else will. If it's bad, millions of people can't eat it. Respect other people's taste if you want the opposite.

Thanks for sharing!
