Fans can't watch Vietnam Olympics live on TV?

VTC NewsVTC News19/09/2023

Vietnam Olympic is the first team of the Vietnamese sports delegation to compete at ASIAD 19. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his team will take the field at 3:00 p.m. today (September 19) to face Mongolia Olympic. However, up to this point, Vietnamese fans still do not know which channel to watch their team compete on. No television station in Vietnam has purchased the broadcasting rights for ASIAD 19 sports, including football.

China Media Group (CMG) is the unit assigned to produce and distribute television and media copyrights for the 19th ASIAD. This company offered copyrights of up to 15 million USD (about 365 billion VND) to Vietnamese television stations. This figure is equivalent to the copyright bid for the 2022 World Cup, while the ASIAD is only a continental sports event and men's football in particular is only for young players.

Fans will not be able to watch the Vietnamese Olympic team compete at the 19th ASIAD on television.

As the 19th ASIAD opens, media and social networks have reported that CMG has lowered the copyright price to 7 million USD (about 170 billion VND), but no TV station in Vietnam has accepted. Up to this point, the match between the Vietnam Olympic and Mongolia Olympic games will definitely not be broadcast on television in Vietnam.

It is not the first time that Vietnamese television stations are not interested in the high-priced copyright of ASIAD. In 2018, Voice of Vietnam (VOV) and VTC Digital Television had to negotiate hard with partners to get the copyright to broadcast the games of the Games. However, fans still had to wait until the end of the group stage to watch the Vietnam Olympic team with Quang Hai, Van Quyet, Van Hau... compete.

The price of ASIAD television rights has increased over each period. At ASIAD 2014 in Korea, the copyright price was only 200,000 USD, but 4 years later, the price was nearly 8 times higher. By this period, the asking price has increased 10 times compared to ASIAD 18.

If there is no breakthrough in the coming days, the 19th Asian Games will not be broadcast live in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the interest of fans in the Vietnamese sports team is still very high. This leads to the risk of illegal broadcasting and illegal broadcasting sites emerging again.

The 19th Asian Games (ASIAD) opened on September 23 in Hangzhou City (China). More than 12,000 athletes from 45 countries and territories competed.

The Vietnamese Sports Delegation to the 19th ASIAD has 504 members, including 337 athletes, 90 coaches, and 11 experts competing in 31/40 sports and 202/483 events of the Games. The delegation strives to win 2 to 5 gold medals and aims to have many athletes qualify for the 2024 Olympics.
