Bridge connecting Hanoi with Phu Tho has exposed foundation

VnExpressVnExpress05/01/2024

Two of the 13 foundation pillars of Trung Ha Bridge across the Da River, connecting Hanoi with Phu Tho and the northern midland and mountainous provinces, were eroded, leaving 6-7 m exposed, and some piles were damaged.

In late December 2023, the Vietnam Road Administration and the Phu Tho Department of Transport inspected and determined that the Da River bed under the bridge was being severely eroded, especially the area around pillars T11 and T12 (piles on the pile system). The foundation piles are 12-13 m long, but currently only 6-8 m are submerged in sand and soil. Some damaged piles have reduced their load-bearing capacity, potentially posing a risk to the safety of the bridge.

On the afternoon of January 5, the leader of the Department of Transport of Phu Tho province said that relevant units are completing procedures to start repairing the bridge early next week. If all goes well, the reinforcement will take place within a month. During the repair period, the Department will prohibit trucks with 3 axles or more and passenger cars with more than 29 seats from crossing the bridge.

Vehicles going to Phu Tho or Hanoi can go in three directions. One is to go to National Highway 32 through Van Xuan Commune, Tam Nong District (Phu Tho) through Phong Chau Bridge, follow National Highway 32C avoiding Viet Tri City to Van Lang Bridge and go to Ba Vi District (Hanoi) and vice versa.

The second way is to go to National Highway 32 through Dan Quyen Commune, Tam Nong District, turn right onto Provincial Road 317G, continue to Dong Trung Commune, Thanh Thuy District, turn left onto Provincial Road 317E and cross Dong Quang Bridge to Ba Vi.

Another option is to travel from Hanoi to Phu Tho province and vice versa via Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway or National Highway 2.

Phu Tho province also requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Vietnam Electricity Group to direct Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant and related units to regulate the flow and water discharge time to serve the winter-spring rice crop appropriately, minimizing the flow rate causing erosion of Trung Ha bridge foundation pillars.

Trung Ha Bridge is located on Highway 32, the main route connecting Hanoi with the midland and mountainous provinces of the North. The project was invested in construction in 1999 and put into operation in 2002 with a length of 743 m. The bridge abutment and 4 bridge piers are made of reinforced concrete on 40x40 cm piles and the remaining 9 piers are made of reinforced concrete on bored piles.
