The Tianzhou 5 cargo spacecraft separated from the Tiangong space station on May 5, freeing up the docking port for the next supply mission. The Tianzhou 6 spacecraft, loaded with supplies, scientific experiments and propellant, launched to the Tiangong space station on May 11, helping prepare for the next crew.
China launched the manned Shenzhou 16 mission on May 30, carrying three astronauts to the Tiangong space station for a five-month mission. They took over the space station from the Shenzhou 15 crew, who returned to Earth on June 4. Finally, the Tianzhou 5 spacecraft completed its free-flying mission and docked with the Tiangong station again on June 5. The cargo ship will pick up debris from the Tiangong station before it leaves orbit in the near future.
In the video, the Shenzhou-16 spacecraft docks with the port in the Tianhe core module of the station. The cargo airlock hatch of the Mengtian experimental module can be seen through the panoramic camera outside the module.
The Shenzhou 16 crew, including commander Jing Haipeng and his colleague Zhu Yangzhu, and payload specialist Gui Haichao, China's first human in space, will carry out a series of tasks during their stay at the Tiangong space station. They will complete the installation of several large external devices, including radiation exposure experiments and other components on the outer surface of the Mengtian module.
The trio will also study new quantum phenomena and conduct experiments related to testing the general theory of relativity and exploring the origin of life. They will take online science classes. They are the fifth crew to fly to the Tiangong station and the second since the three-module space station was completed in November 2022.
