For many years, watermelon growing has been closely associated with the lives of many farmers in Vinh Phu Dong commune, Phuoc Long district (Bac Lieu province). |

Due to the suitability to local soil conditions, watermelons yield high yields, with large, round, and extremely sweet fruit. |

The most suitable time to plant watermelon for Tet is around October 15-16 and around December 24-25 of the lunar calendar, people start harvesting in bulk to serve the consumption needs during Tet. |

According to melon growers, this year the weather is quite favorable, there is little unseasonal rain so the yield is much higher than last year. However, the price of watermelon is lower than last year. |

The average price of melons for Tet is from 55,000 - 60,000 VND for 6 to 7 kg fruit. |

Mr. Pham Ngoc Chau (residing in Hamlet 1, Vinh Phu Dong Commune, Phuoc Long District) said that this Tet melon crop, his family planted more than 1 hectare of round watermelon. Normally, people sell round watermelon to traders for 22 million VND/hectare, with a yield of about 4.5 tons. |

To ensure the quality of watermelons as well as other agricultural products with high productivity, the People's Committee of Phuoc Long district has directed the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to actively support farmers in using fertilizers properly to ensure hygiene and safety for consumers' health. |

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Lieu province, this year, the whole province planted more than 150 hectares of watermelon to serve the demand during the Lunar New Year, bringing people a good profit, helping many households celebrate the traditional New Year more properly. |
