Internal and international tensions surround Netanyahu

At home, two members of Israel's wartime cabinet have expressed disagreement over Prime Minister Netanyahu's scenario for ending the conflict. Wartime Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz threatened to resign if Netanyahu did not approve a post-war plan for Gaza by June 8. In response, Netanyahu criticized Gantz for choosing to "issue an ultimatum to the prime minister instead of to Hamas", emphasizing that the above demands were "empty words with the clear meaning of ending the war with defeat for Israel, abandoning most of the hostages and letting Hamas take power".

Earlier, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant made it clear that he opposed Israel's control of the Gaza Strip as planned by Netanyahu after the war ended. The above moves could pose a challenge to the stability of Netanyahu's government and the unpredictable future in the region.

In addition, a wave of protests spread to major cities in Israel such as Tel Aviv, Caesarea and Haifa, demanding a hostage exchange agreement with Hamas, the removal of Prime Minister Netanyahu's government and the promotion of early elections in the country.

Israeli Defense Minister Challenges Prime Minister Netanyahu

On the international side, during a meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu on May 20, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stressed that Israel needs to link its military operations with a political strategy to ensure the long-term defeat of Hamas, the release of all hostages and a better scenario for Gaza. Mr. Sullivan also put pressure on Israel to open more aid routes into Gaza, including all available routes and the multinational humanitarian maritime corridor. On May 19, US President Joe Biden called for an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza while speaking at the graduation ceremony at Morehouse College (USA).

The United Nations has stressed that supplies via the floating dock built by the US military are not enough to address the "catastrophic" food shortage in Gaza. UN Deputy Secretary-General Martin Griffiths warned that the situation was "doomsday". According to Gaza health authorities, Israel's war in Gaza has killed more than 35,000 Palestinians, sparking international criticism of the Israeli government.
