On February 1, the Gemini shipping alliance of two container shipping lines Maersk (Denmark) and Hapag Lloyd (Germany) came into effect globally. In Vietnam, Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) was chosen as the sole main port.

Gemini shipping alliance between Maersk and Hapag Lloyd begins global operations, choosing CMIT as its main port in Vietnam.

To form the Gemini Shipping Alliance, Maersk withdrew from the 2M alliance, while Hapag-Lloyd left THE Alliance in early 2025. A shipping alliance is a form of cooperation between shipping lines, where parties share resources such as information, schedules and space on board, to optimize operational efficiency and save costs.

However, the shipping lines in the alliance do not cooperate on marketing, sales, or freight rates.

The Gemini Shipping Alliance aims to improve the operational efficiency of shipping lines by expanding their service network, increasing the frequency of their services and improving vessel occupancy rates. At the same time, the lines will leverage their scale and network to reduce costs and provide more competitive rates to customers.

Fast and accurate cargo handling at CMIT port ensures global shipping efficiency.

CMIT Port becoming the main port in Southern Vietnam in the Gemini Shipping Alliance will play an important role in enhancing connectivity between Cai Mep-Thi Vai port cluster and international shipping routes.

This not only helps increase the volume of import and export goods, but also opens up opportunities for cooperation, logistics development and improvement of seaport infrastructure, thereby promoting the development of the domestic shipping industry.

On the journey of more than 14 years of operation, CMIT Port has always been the leading bird in opening a new chapter for the Cai Mep - Thi Vai deep-water port area when it pioneered the successful testing of receiving the world's largest tonnage ships, one of the most important milestones being the testing of receiving 194,000 DWT tonnage ships in 2017 and increasing to 214,000 DWT ships in 2020. CMIT has become one of the very few ports in the world capable of receiving these super-large sized ships. And this is also the basis for the Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam Maritime Administration to license a number of other deep-water ports in the Cai Mep area to be able to receive ships of similar sizes.
