Take advantage of strategic location, develop potential

Located in a strategic location, connecting smoothly with the main routes on the transport infrastructure system in Quang Nam and the Central region, Chu Lai port has many advantages in connecting between regions and areas such as: connecting 2km with the horizontal axis, including National Highway 1, Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway, coastal road (connecting Da Nang, Hoi An, Chu Lai airport) and Ho Chi Minh road; connecting the vertical axis including National Highway 14E, National Highway 14B, National Highway 14D... These routes have a high volume of traffic and freight, because they are located on the freight route from the southern provinces of Laos - Bo Y International Border Gate (Kon Tum), Nam Giang International Border Gate. This port is an important gateway, ensuring intra-regional and inter-regional connections along coastal routes, the East-West economic corridor, synchronous connection with the whole country and international connections.

According to the Planning of Quang Nam province for the period of 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, the province focuses on developing areas such as aviation, seaports, and logistics services. Along with the province's development strategy in the maritime sector such as: investing in a new Cua Lo waterway connecting to neighboring wharf areas associated with duty-free zones, industrial parks, airports, and railway stations; at the same time, forming a multimodal logistics center; Chu Lai port will increasingly develop when it is positioned to become a seaport - container logistics service center in the Central and Central Highlands regions.

On the other hand, the Central region is considered the center of manufacturing and export industries such as textiles, footwear, wood and furniture, metals and other key industrial groups such as agricultural product processing industry, heavy industry, oil and gas and energy; there are many large industrial parks and economic zones such as: THACO Chu Lai, Bac Chu Lai, Tam Thang (Quang Nam), VSIP, Dung Quat (Quang Ngai)... Therefore, Chu Lai port has many advantages and opportunities to promote its key role, becoming a logistics center, connecting world trade in the region.

Promoting the key role in the logistics chain

Currently, exported goods from the Central Highlands provinces, Southern Laos through the international border gates of Nam Giang (Quang Nam), Bo Y (Kon Tum), and the northeastern region of Cambodia through the Le Thanh border gate (Gia Lai) are transported to Chu Lai port by road, then connecting to the sea transport route to Northeast Asian countries, Europe, America, etc. and vice versa. Accordingly, Chu Lai port is the midpoint in the multimodal logistics chain from road transport - seaport - sea transport; creating an important and continuous connection to help the production and business process of enterprises be more convenient, optimize profits and increase competitive advantages.

Recently, THILOGI - the owner of Chu Lai port has successfully registered and been approved to join the US government's Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), becoming an intermediary carrier for the Vietnam - US trade route and vice versa. THILOGI's direct signing of contracts with shipping lines will help Chu Lai port develop more service routes to the American market, effectively serving businesses in the Central region and neighboring areas.

A representative of an FDI enterprise exporting goods through Chu Lai port said: “With the Chu Lai - America service route through domestic and international transit ports, Chu Lai Port has helped our goods access the US market conveniently, quickly and economically; at the same time contributing to promoting trade of goods to the European and American markets of FDI enterprises”.

Mr. Phan Van Ky - General Director of Chu Lai Port affirmed: “The port is expanding its services, strengthening connections with international shipping lines to diversify shipping routes to Northeast Asia, the US, Canada, etc., opening up export flows from the Central Highlands, Southern Laos, and Northeast Cambodia. In addition, thanks to the large available land fund, Chu Lai Port has the advantage of expanding its warehouse system to meet the storage needs of goods with room for strong development in the coming time. From there, it attracts a variety of goods, especially agricultural - forestry - mineral products such as: cassava starch, coffee, rubber, ore, etc., imported and exported through the port”.

In the first 6 months of 2024, Chu Lai port invested more than 400 billion VND in equipment, vehicles, and infrastructure upgrades including: new, modern crane systems with large capacity (STS gantry cranes and RTG frame cranes); specialized semi-trailers for transporting goods; expanding warehouse and yard areas along with automatic car wash systems and weighing stations...

It is expected that by the end of July 2024, Chu Lai port will complete and put into operation a new wharf area - a 50,000-ton deep-water port, receiving container ships with a capacity of up to 50,000 DWT, applying modern technology in port operations and exploitation to implement the strategy of building a green, smart port, aiming at sustainable development goals.
