Ho Chi Minh City is completing procedures to start the project to renovate the most polluted canal in the inner city - Xuyen Tam canal - in April on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and national reunification.
Xuyen Tam Canal is nearly 9 km long, flowing through Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts, and is considered the most polluted canal in Ho Chi Minh City. To "revive" this canal, Ho Chi Minh City is completing procedures to start the Xuyen Tam Canal renovation project in April on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification.
According to Dan Viet reporters, most of the houses along this canal are dilapidated, makeshift, surrounded by garbage and foul odors.
Most of the people here are poor workers.
A representative of the Compensation and Site Clearance Board of Binh Thanh District said that the dredging and environmental improvement project for the Xuyen Tam canal infrastructure in Binh Thanh District has a total compensation area of 139,333 m2 with 2,077 households affected.
Binh Thanh district's compensation estimate is 13,221,671 billion VND, the deadline for handing over the site is in April.
Before the news of moving to a new place, Ms. Tran Thi Hong (residing in Binh Thanh district) shared: "We have been here for ten years and are used to it. According to the State's policy, now we just hope that the government will compensate appropriately so that people can have a stable life."
The project of dredging, improving the environment, and building infrastructure of Xuyen Tam canal aims to invest in solving environmental pollution, improving drainage, connecting local traffic and building technical infrastructure, collecting wastewater to the city's centralized wastewater treatment plant. Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council unanimously approved the adjustment of the policy, increasing the investment capital of the Xuyen Tam canal renovation project from more than VND 9,664 billion to nearly VND 17,230 billion.
Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong requested Binh Thanh District to continue to pay attention to and focus on compensation, support and resettlement for 2,077 households affected by the Xuyen Tam canal project; ensure full rights of the people and ensure the right progress to start the project in April.
