How to convert university admission scores 2025

The Ministry of Education and Training plans to use graduation exam scores or transcripts as the basis, combining a series of criteria for universities to develop a formula for converting admission scores in 2025.

According to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), it is expected that universities will still be allowed to use many admission methods, but must consider them together with graduation exam scores, and at the same time convert scores between methods and combinations to a common scale.

As at Hanoi University of Science and Technology last year, the thinking assessment exam was calculated on a 100-point scale, the talent admission exam was calculated on a 110-point scale, and the high school graduation exam score was calculated on a 30-point scale. According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, this year it must be converted to the same scale.

The Ministry of Education and Training requires that the conversion must be simple, easy to understand, and convenient for application. In which, schools use high school graduation exam scores or high school learning results as the basis for developing conversion rules. Schools then analyze statistical data on the number of candidates admitted by each method (at least two consecutive years), and the learning results of each student. From the correlation between university learning results and the score distribution of the methods of the same group of candidates; the threshold to ensure input quality (floor score) to the maximum level of the score scale, schools must determine at least 3 score ranges (for example, excellent - good, fair, pass), from which to build at least three linear correlation functions (3 first-order functions) for these score ranges.

Based on the standard rules announced by the Ministry after the high school graduation exam scores are available, based on the specific characteristics of the training program and major, the university will complete the conversion rules.

The Ministry of Education and Training also gives examples for schools and candidates to follow as follows:

Analyzing the results of the same group of candidates using the 2024 high school graduation exam results and the academic transcript results (6 semesters) according to 5 traditional groups; based on the assessment of students' academic results in previous years, it shows that: Excellent candidates account for 30% of the total number of admitted candidates, corresponding to the high school graduation exam results of 24.75 and the academic transcript admission score of 25.75; Good candidates or better account for 80% of the total number of candidates, the corresponding high school graduation exam results are 20.5 and the academic transcript admission score is 22; the rest are at the passing level.

Accordingly, universities can use the scores (24.75; 25.75); (20.5; 22) along with the threshold score to ensure input quality and the maximum score of the assessment scale (30; 30) to linearize each region and establish a formula (first-degree equation form) to convert the equivalent admission score between the two methods.

To date, many universities have collected and analyzed data to build a sample formula, while waiting for the 2025 high school graduation exam score data. Although there will be many calculations, schools all emphasize that candidates should not worry about converting scores. Instead, candidates should focus on studying well, reviewing for the high school graduation exam and can take some competency assessment tests, improve international certificate scores to increase the chance of admission. When the results are available, candidates only need to apply the formula to get the admission score.
