How many planes do Vietnamese airlines own?

Việt NamViệt Nam07/08/2024

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, the total number of aircraft that Vietnamese airlines have in their Aircraft Operator Certificates (AOCs) is 195, a decrease of 36 aircraft compared to the same period in 2023.

Vietnam Airlines received another wide-body B787-10 aircraft in July.

However, the current average number of aircraft in operation is about 167, down about 51 compared to the same period in 2023. If the ratio of total aircraft in use to the total number of aircraft in the AOC of airlines in 2023 is 94.4%, in 2024 this ratio will only be 85.6%.

The large aircraft shortage has lasted since the end of last year due to many reasons, including aircraft maintenance related to Airbus engine problems...

To maintain operations, airlines have sought every way to add aircraft and maintain capacity, but this is also facing difficulties due to the general shortage of aircraft worldwide.

After a period of struggling due to a lack of aircraft, airlines are now also increasing their search and negotiating to lease additional aircraft to supplement the number of aircraft that have been grounded.

In July 2024, Vietnamese airlines added 4 more aircraft to serve the peak summer season. Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines received 1 wide-body B787-10 and 1 A320.

Bamboo Airways received 1 A320 aircraft, Vietravel Airlines received 1 A319 aircraft.

According to the report, from now until the end of 2024, Vietnam Airlines is expected to receive 3 more aircraft (including 2 A320 aircraft and 1 B787-10 aircraft).

Vietjet Air is expected to receive 2 Embraer E190 aircraft in August 2024 to increase operations to Con Dao and is negotiating to lease about 7-9 A321/A330 aircraft.

Regarding the international flight network, in the first 6 months of 2024, there were 63 foreign airlines (including 4 Vietnamese airlines: Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, Vietjet Air, Vietravel Airlines) operating nearly 160 international routes connecting Vietnam and countries around the world.

The international flight network has been restored to pre-Covid-19 levels and continues to expand to new markets in Central Asia, India, Australia, etc.

Especially, during holidays and summer vacations, international flights to tourist destinations such as Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc, and Da Lat are exploited by airlines with high output and frequency.

Of which, Da Nang International Airport has 24 airlines operating 17 international routes, Cam Ranh International Airport has 16 airlines operating 13 international routes, Phu Quoc International Airport has 7 airlines operating 8 international routes...

International passenger transport output reached 20.3 million passengers, up 38% over the same period in 2023 and approximately the same level as the same period in 2019.

In the first 6 months of 2024, airlines transported more than 17.2 million domestic passengers, equal to 82% compared to the same period in 2023. Due to difficulties in the aircraft fleet, airlines had to adjust the supply on domestic routes and this was the reason why the domestic market decreased compared to the same period in 2023 and 2019.

However, airlines still maintain domestic flight networks with 50 routes connecting Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and 20 airports nationwide.
