New tobacco ban: Important step forward in protecting public health

The National Assembly agreed to ban e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, gases, and addictive substances that are harmful to human health from 2025.

This is an important decision, widely welcomed by the medical community, social organizations and the community, because it not only contributes to minimizing health risks but also demonstrates the government's strong commitment to protecting people's health.

A victory for public health

In recent years, electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products have become a "hot" issue in Vietnamese society.

With the reason of "less harmful than traditional cigarettes", many people, especially young people, have easily accessed and used these products. However, scientific studies have shown that e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products are not as safe as advertised by manufacturers and also contain many chemicals that are harmful to health.

The new tobacco ban decision has been widely welcomed by health professionals, social organizations and the community.

E-cigarettes contain nicotine and toxic substances that can be addictive, affect brain development in adolescents and increase the risk of cardiovascular, respiratory and cancer diseases.

Heated tobacco products, although not producing smoke like regular cigarettes, still emit toxic substances, causing harm to the health of users and those around them when they inhale secondhand smoke.

Reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) and many other international studies have also confirmed that, although e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products are advertised as "substitutes" for traditional cigarettes, the truth is the opposite. Using them still carries the risk of nicotine addiction and leads to serious health problems.

The decision by the Vietnamese National Assembly to ban e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products is considered a major victory in tobacco harm prevention. This is a strong step to prevent the spread of these products, protect public health and reduce the burden on the health system.

A lung specialist at Bach Mai Hospital shared that this decision is very correct and timely. In fact, e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products have been causing many concerns about public health, especially for young people. Banning these products not only helps protect users but also contributes to creating a healthier environment for the community.

In addition, banning e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products is also an effective strategy for Vietnam to fulfill its commitment to reduce tobacco harm under the National Tobacco Harm Prevention Program, while protecting people's health from potential risks from these addictive products.

The joy of community organizations

The National Assembly’s decision received strong support from health organizations, social organizations and the community. Ms. Nguyen Thi An, Director of HealthBridge Canada in Vietnam, said, “We welcome the National Assembly’s decision, as this is an important step forward in protecting the health of the Vietnamese people, especially the younger generation.

According to Ms. An, banning e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products not only helps reduce the risk of dangerous diseases but also raises public awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also encourages countries to take similar precautions to protect public health, as the unregulated development of tobacco alternatives will lead to unpredictable health consequences in the future.

Many people, especially parents, were also happy about this decision. Ms. Hai Yen, a parent in Hanoi, shared that she was very happy to hear this news.

My children are just entering their teens, and I am always worried about the negative impact e-cigarette products may have on their health. Banning these products is essential, for the future of the young generation must be protected.

Although the decision to ban e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products has been passed, monitoring and enforcement remains a significant challenge.

Authorities need to take strong measures to stop the sale, transportation and consumption of these products, while stepping up propaganda and educating the community about the harmful effects of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products.

In addition, it is necessary to continue promoting comprehensive tobacco harm prevention and control strategies, including building smoke-free environments, banning tobacco advertising and marketing, and increasing support for people who want to quit smoking.

I think the National Assembly's decision to ban e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products is not only a great victory in the work of preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco, but also a testament to the determination to protect people's health.

This is the right and necessary step, not only to protect public health, but also to create a healthier future for future generations.
