Experts describe this as a breakthrough in the field of cell reprogramming, helping to understand pregnancy and possible complications, such as placental dysfunction, screening for diseases that may occur during pregnancy and developing cell therapies.

Previously, obtaining placental cells was difficult due to technical and ethical limitations. The study above overcame the barrier by obtaining those cells from human skin samples.

The scientists successfully identified a distinct cluster of genes that control the identity of placental stem cells, which act as important precursor cells for placental development. By inducing the expression of these genes in skin cells, the researchers successfully transformed skin cells into stable, functional placental stem cells.
