Ms. Le Thi Hong Phuong - Principal of Mo Lao Secondary School (Ha Dong District, Hanoi), affirmed that the school did not force parents to sign applications for their children to volunteer for extra classes.
On the afternoon of February 11, information appeared on social media about a person claiming to be a parent of a child studying at Mo Lao Secondary School, accusing the school of forcing parents to sign a petition to let their children volunteer for extra classes.
“Yesterday, Monday, I had to go to my child’s school for an extraordinary parent-teacher meeting. The homeroom teachers announced that they would continue to teach extra classes in the afternoon for a fee (main classes are in the morning) and forced parents to sign voluntary registration papers from February 14 after Circular 29 banned extra classes. We have had to sign these extra classes for many years, even though we didn’t want to.”
The post attracted public attention because extra teaching and learning is a "hot" topic as Circular 29 will take effect on February 14.
Regarding this issue, Ms. Le Thi Hong Phuong - Principal of Mo Lao Secondary School (Ha Dong District, Hanoi) affirmed that the school did not force parents to sign applications for their children to volunteer for extra classes.
“When there was information about Circular 29, many parents of the school were very concerned and worried about managing their children in the afternoon when they were off school, because most parents work all day. Meanwhile, Official Dispatch 7291/BGDĐT-GDTrH dated November 1, 2010 on teaching two sessions a day if secondary schools have sufficient facilities clearly stated that this organization will only be implemented when students have the need and parents agree.
On the afternoon of February 10, the school held a meeting with parents to get their opinions. If parents volunteer, the school will organize it, but if not, we will stop.
Currently, 28/33 classes have submitted minutes, of which 100% of parents agree. I affirm that there is no forcing parents to sign the minutes to voluntarily take extra classes. Because from the beginning, the school agreed that if just one parent disagrees, it will not be implemented," said Ms. Phuong.
Ms. Hong Phuong also said that regarding the post on social media, the school has received the information, but it is unclear whether this is a parent of the school or not because it is a virtual account, no information has been made public.
“We are always open to the parents of the school. If there is any issue that is not satisfactory or satisfactory, parents can meet with the school board to share. The school always listens with the desire to build a stronger community,” said Ms. Phuong.
