On December 11, the Mexican Senate passed a draft law banning the production, trade, import, possession, transportation and use of e-cigarettes, as well as the synthetic drug fentanyl and its derivatives to protect people's health.

With 110 votes in favor, 5 votes against and 2 abstentions, the Mexican Senate unanimously approved amendments to Articles 4 and 5 of the Constitution to enact the ban, citing scientific evidence that the use of e-cigarettes seriously affects people's health, especially young people.

After being approved by the Senate, the draft law banning e-cigarettes and the synthetic drug fentanyl will be submitted to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for approval before officially taking effect.

According to local media, the new law will likely come into effect from January 2025.

The latest statistics show that about 1.7 million Mexicans are currently using e-cigarettes and this number is increasing every year.

In addition to the market for high-end e-cigarette products supplied by official importers, low-cost e-cigarettes smuggled into Mexico are being sold on the black market with a value that could be up to 260 million USD/year.

Research results conducted by the Mexican Ministry of Health show that although e-cigarettes do not contain traditional tobacco ingredients, they are still addictive due to their high nicotine content, causing many serious diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, acute lung injury and affecting mental health.
