Specifically, Thailand has referee Sivakorn Pu-udom on duty at the 2023 Asian Cup. This 37-year-old referee was the main referee in Syria's 1-0 win over India in Group B.
Meanwhile, the representative of Singaporean referees at this year's Asian Championship is Muhammad Taqi, 37 years old. Mr. Muhammad Taqi officiated the match between UAE and Hong Kong (China) 3-1 in Group C.
Malaysian referee Nazmi Nasaruddin to officiate at 2023 Asian Cup
Another Southeast Asian referee appearing at the 2023 Asian Cup is Mr. Nazmi Nasaruddin (Malaysian), 33 years old. Mr. Nazmi Nasaruddin was the referee of the match where Iraq beat the Vietnamese team 3-2 in Group D. After that, referee Nazmi Nasaruddin continued to referee the match where Uzbekistan beat Thailand 2-1 in the round of 16 of the tournament.
These were all matches that the Malaysian referee officiated very well. Decisions regarding red cards and penalties were all correctly adjudicated by Mr. Nazmi Nasaruddin, avoiding controversy from all sides.
In contrast to referees in Southeast Asia, Vietnam does not have any referees to officiate at the 2023 Asian Cup.
This once again reflects the problem with the level of Vietnamese football referees. The 2023 Asian Cup is not the first major tournament in recent years to lack Vietnamese referees.
Vietnam has no referees on duty at the 2023 Asian Cup finals
In the past few years, domestic referees have not appeared regularly in the AFC Champions League. Vietnamese football still has referee Ngo Duy Lan who often officiates in the AFC Cup, but the AFC Champions League is a more prestigious tournament with higher quality than the AFC Cup.
Explaining this, a former head of the VFF Referee Board said that the fact that domestic referees are currently not allowed to officiate major tournaments such as the AFC Champions League and Asian Cup reflects that the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) does not currently appreciate the quality of Vietnamese referees. This is different from the time when Vietnamese football had high-caliber referees such as Vo Minh Tri or Luong The Tai in previous generations.
After the Vietnamese team was eliminated from the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup, due to losses to Indonesia and Iraq, stemming from situations of receiving red cards and unnecessary penalties, fans raised the issue of referees needing to be better, stricter and more lawful in domestic tournaments.
Now, witnessing the success of referees in the Southeast Asian region in the ongoing Asian Championship in Qatar, while Vietnamese referees do not have a place to appear in this tournament, the quality of Vietnamese referees once again leaves a sigh for domestic football fans.
