This page explains that the baguette was introduced to Vietnam during the colonial period and that the ingredients such as the crust, spices, meats, etc. originated from France and China.
Meanwhile, cilantro, chili, and pickles reflect the Vietnamese taste for fresh vegetables and mild flavors.
TasteAtlas also "thoughtfully" guides foreign readers to pronounce banh mi as "bun mee" and introduces that banh mi in Vietnam is very diverse.

This is not the first time Vietnamese bread has been honored among the world's best sandwiches.
Last April, CNN Travel ranked banh mi number 5 on its list of the world's 24 best sandwiches.

The word "Banh Mi" has also been included in many world famous dictionaries such as Oxford, Cambridge, Merriam-Webster...
“A Vietnamese-style baguette filled with cold cuts, pate, and vegetables,” Oxford Learners' Dictionaries defines.
While sandwiches in general topped TasteAtlas' list, meatloaf was ranked number nine on its own.
Banh mi thit is a traditional Vietnamese sandwich. As the name suggests, this sandwich is made with a variety of Vietnamese cold cuts along with cucumbers, mayonnaise, pickled carrots and radishes, and liver pate stuffed into the bread, this page explains about banh mi thit.
TasteAtlas also reports that banh mi thit is often garnished with ingredients like cilantro, black pepper and chopped chili. These meat-filled sandwiches are found all over Vietnam.
Meat sandwiches are usually eaten for breakfast and lunch, but can be eaten at any meal of the day if purchased from street vendors.
