Sonora state officials said two security officials were hospitalized after the shootout but are in stable condition.
The Sonora state attorney general's office said it suspected the group of criminals armed with assault weapons were trying to rescue the son of Jesus Humberto Limon, a suspected assassin working for a faction of the Sinaloa cartel led by the sons of kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
Carlos Humberto, son of assassin Jesus Humberto Limon, was detained minutes earlier on Camino del Seri.
The attorney general's office said government agents were targeted Saturday afternoon on the highway linking the state capital Hermosillo with Bahia de Kino on the Pacific coast, but security forces repelled the attack.
Security forces seized 21 assault weapons including AR-15s and AK-47s, bulletproof vests, camouflage kits, six modern trucks and a significant amount of ammunition.
