On February 13, Hanoi Medical University (HMU) and Sydney University Vietnam (SVI) honored the achievements of two outstanding scientists, Associate Professor Justin Beardsley and Associate Professor Vu Van Giap.
The event highlights the growing partnership between Australia and Vietnam in medical research and education.
Hanoi Medical University has awarded the title of Honorary Professor to Associate Professor Beardsley, an infectious disease specialist at Westmead Hospital and clinical researcher from the University of Sydney, in recognition of his significant contributions, particularly in the field of infectious disease research.
His research, which includes a publication in the New England Journal of Medicine on Cryptococcal Meningitis, focuses on fungal infections, tuberculosis, and antibiotic resistance in resource-limited settings.
He led the development of the WHO 2022 List of Priority Fungal Pathogens and is currently a member of two WHO Expert Advisory Groups. He has collaborated extensively with Hanoi Medical University for over 5 years on projects addressing antimicrobial resistance, Aspergillus infections, and improving the diagnosis and management of invasive fungal diseases in Vietnam.
The University of Sydney has officially conferred the title of Associate Professor of the University of Sydney on Associate Professor Vu Van Giap, in recognition of his outstanding research contributions and dedication to collaborative projects between Australia and Vietnam.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Giap is currently the Director of the Center for Training and Guidance, Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Internal Medicine, Hanoi Medical University.
A leading respiratory expert with 80 scientific papers and 20 book chapters, Associate Professor Giap has made significant contributions to research on various respiratory diseases. He has served as a member of Vietnam’s national committees on antimicrobial resistance and respiratory disease guidelines. He has also been actively involved in Australian research since 2017 as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Sydney.
Since then, Associate Professor Giap has played a key role as principal investigator in numerous medical studies and clinical trials on respiratory diseases, including tuberculosis, COPD, asthma and smoking cessation programmes. As Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital and Secretary General of the Vietnam Respiratory Society, he has played a key role in the design, establishment and implementation of these research initiatives. Some of his research has contributed to changing World Health Organization guidelines globally and shaping healthcare practices in Vietnam.
