On the morning of August 17, social media shared a photo of a pregnant woman in Nam Khat commune, Mu Cang Chai district being delivered by a doctor right on the roadside, with congratulations for the woman's luck in meeting "the right person, at the right time".

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online on the evening of August 17, Doctor Giang A Vinh - currently working at Nam Khat Commune Health Station - was surprised when the image of him delivering a baby on the road was shared on social networks.

Dr. Vinh humbly said: "That's my job. In such circumstances, any doctor would definitely do the same."

Recounting the unexpected incident that happened on the morning of August 17, Dr. Vinh said that the road from Mu Cang Chai center to Nam Khat commune, about 40km away, was his way to work.

"Today is Saturday, my day off. Normally I would stay at home, but because I have work, I still pass this road. Maybe it was a coincidence that I met a woman in labor right on the side of the road," Dr. Vinh said with a smile.

After traveling about 20km, Dr. Vinh saw a couple lying on the road next to a motorbike. Although the husband did not shout for help, with his experience as a doctor in the highlands, he stopped to examine the situation.

Doctor Vinh said that when he checked, he saw that the baby's head had come out of the "door", with such a condition, it would be impossible to move to the district center in time, and the baby had to be delivered immediately to ensure the safety of both mother and baby.

At this time, he instructed the woman in labor to take a breath to push, called on nearby people to find scissors, boil water to soak, and then prepare a gauze towel.

"Everything happened very quickly. Luckily, the baby was born healthy and rosy-cheeked, and the mother was stable. I used scissors to cut the umbilical cord and used a gauze towel to wipe the baby's body. The baby was a boy, weighing about 3kg," said Dr. Vinh.

After the delivery, which lasted about 25 minutes, Dr. Vinh stayed behind to monitor the mother and child, then instructed the family to take the baby to the hospital for examination.

After asking around, Dr. Vinh learned that the woman was giving birth for the second time and also lived in Nam Khat commune, where he was working.

Doctor Vinh added that in the highlands of Mu Cang Chai, it is not uncommon for a woman to give birth on the street. A few years ago, he also delivered a baby for a pregnant woman, but luckily it was in a car. This time, delivering a baby on the street also made him quite worried because of safety issues.

"However, due to the urgent situation, I could not do otherwise. In the highlands, many people do not have much knowledge about maternity care.

Like this pregnant woman, although she works in the locality where I work, she has never had an ultrasound, vaccination, or pregnancy monitoring at the commune health station. That is why the pregnant woman did not know her due date, leading to her giving birth on the road," Dr. Vinh explained.
