Australia issues urgent warning over Uncle Frog's Mushroom "gummy" candies

An urgent warning has been issued in Australia after at least five people were hospitalised with serious symptoms after consuming Uncle Frog's Mushroom "mushroom" gummies.

Patients reported a range of alarming symptoms, including persistent vomiting, seizures, involuntary movements, hallucinations, anxiety, loss of consciousness, and rapid heart rate.

Health officials have warned that these products may contain unapproved ingredients and may be toxic.

Mushroom gummy products are sold on social networks.

The incident began when Perth mother-of-three Laura Jones ate an Uncle Frog's Mushroom gummy that her husband had bought online in the hope of helping relieve stress.

Within an hour, Ms Jones began experiencing severe symptoms and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. “I felt like I was going to die. I was thinking, ‘What’s going to happen to the kids?’,” Ms Jones said. She said her heart rate remained elevated for the next two days and she felt very emotionally affected by the incident.

Health officials in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria have all issued warnings about the product after similar hospitalisations were recorded.

According to reports, at least five people in New South Wales and three people in Queensland have been hospitalised due to consuming Uncle Frog's Mushroom.

Authorities said the products contained “novel” ingredients such as lion’s mane and cordyceps mushrooms, which have not been approved for sale in Australia. They warned that consuming wild mushrooms could be dangerous because they are difficult to identify.

Rohan Bandil, director of the company that distributes Uncle Frog's Mushroom in Australia, has apologized and confirmed that the company has ceased operations and recalled the product.

However, he maintained that the products are safe when used in the correct dosage. Health officials advise people not to use these products and to contact the National Poison Information Center if they experience any unusual symptoms. The investigation into the cause of the poisoning is still ongoing.
