Those were the main messages delivered after three working days with nearly 20 activities of the 43rd ASEAN Summit and related conferences in Indonesia.
A connected, high-caliber ASEAN
Throughout the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh delivered speeches with many proposed initiatives.
As at the East Asia Summit on September 7, the Prime Minister said that it is necessary to persevere with the basic principles in international relations, strengthen trust, and affirm that ASEAN is ready to consult, dialogue, and cooperate on an equal, trustworthy, and mutually respectful basis. The Prime Minister expects partners to support ASEAN's central role in both words and actions.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet said that this was a "productive" conference, with 90 documents approved and acknowledged.
The mark of ASEAN's stature is clearly and consistently affirmed with the presence of nearly 20 partners.
Mr. Viet especially emphasized Vietnam's contributions on this occasion, especially Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's statement that prioritizing institutional removal and ensuring regional peace, security and stability is ASEAN's own responsibility and effort.
Sharing with Tuoi Tre, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien said that many contents approved at the conference have great significance. With the theme "ASEAN stature:
The "heart of growth" economic pillar became the highlight when ASEAN leaders and China, Korea, and Japan adopted a statement on developing a regional electric vehicle ecosystem to reduce emissions; Blue Economy Framework and High-level Statement on building an ASEAN Framework Agreement on the Digital Economy; Statement on enhancing food security and nutrition.
Realizing initiatives
"These documents are meaningful in the process of accelerating the transformation and participation in the digital economy in an inclusive manner through the initiation of negotiations on the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) and Promoting Sustainable Economic Growth," said Mr. Dien.
He also said that Vietnam is among the countries that are considered to be able to take advantage of ASEAN's promotion of digital economic integration, so there will be great opportunities from the commitments made. According to the assessment, the implementation of the ASEAN Framework Agreement on the Digital Economy is expected to help Vietnam's digital economy increase 6.5 times by 2030.
Following the conference, Dr. Nguyen Khac Giang, a Vietnamese political and economic expert at the Yusof Ishak Institute (Singapore), said that the fact that ASEAN leaders and partner countries identified the challenges that need to be solved and put forth specific action programs, promoting cooperation in many fields, with a focus on prioritizing the green economy and digital economy, is of great significance.
Because when the world market is filled with competition between superpowers, especially the US and China, ASEAN must on one hand maintain neutrality in the face of pressure to maintain its central role, but on the other hand must also promote economic cooperation and regional and international linkages.
In particular, the initiative of self-effort, people-centeredness, and institutional reform proposed by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Mr. Giang assessed, will contribute to helping ASEAN become an important link in the global supply chain.
In fact, ASEAN has many strengths to take advantage of these. Maintaining good growth and economic cooperation has helped the countries in the bloc create a common voice amid some disagreements.
"To take advantage of this opportunity, ASEAN needs to build a strong and self-reliant economic institution to cooperate and invest in each other, forming a supply chain and connection. If there is a good institution and cooperation mechanism, it will create a strong springboard, forming an economy large enough to join hands with other countries.
This also creates motivation for Vietnam to strongly reform its institutions, policies, and investment environment, promoting its advantages as a promising destination in the supply chain and infrastructure connectivity," Mr. Giang analyzed.
Transfer of ASEAN 2024 tenure to Laos

In his speech assuming the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN in 2024, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone officially announced the theme of ASEAN 2024 as "Promoting Connectivity and Resilience", sharing the focuses and priorities on strengthening solidarity, unity and the central role of ASEAN, promoting the building of a connected, resilient and sustainable community.
