In the rankings announced by Times Higher Education (THE) on October 9, two ASEAN schools were in the top 30 universities in the world.

Singapore continues to be the only ASEAN country in the top 30. While the National University of Singapore excelled, rising to 17th place in the world, up 2 places compared to the 2024 rankings, Nanyang Technological University ranked 30th.
There are a total of 93 ASEAN universities in the rankings. Indonesia leads with 31, followed by Malaysia with 23, and Thailand in third place with 20. Meanwhile, the Philippines has 6 ranked universities, up 1 from 2024.
Vietnam has 9 representatives. For the first time, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics is in the 501-600 group. Although Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University maintained their 601-800 rankings, they had to “cede” the top position in Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics.
Hanoi Medical University and Ho Chi Minh City Open University also made their debuts in the rankings, appearing in groups 801-1000 and 1201-1500, respectively. The remaining Vietnamese representatives include Hanoi National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hue University and Ho Chi Minh City National University.
According to Phil Baty, Director of Global Affairs at Times Higher Education, Singapore continues to be the world's leading destination for higher education, research and talent development. Mr. Baty also highly appreciated Malaysia when it was in the top 250 and Indonesia with the largest number of ranked schools in Southeast Asia. In addition, Mr. Baty is concerned about the situation of putting quantity above quality in Thai universities.
In Asia, China has two representatives in the top 30, Tsinghua University and Peking University. In addition, this is the 9th consecutive year that Oxford University (UK) holds the top position among the world's leading universities. The 2nd and 3rd positions belong to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University (USA), respectively.
THE World University Rankings 2025 is considered a comprehensive, rigorous and objective measure to evaluate universities based on 18 indicators and on 5 main areas such as training, research environment, research quality, knowledge transfer and international integration.
In 2025, there will be 2,092 schools from 115 countries and regions ranked, an increase of 185 schools compared to 2024.
