Argentina follows President Trump in withdrawing from WHO

According to Reuters, on February 5, the Argentine government led by President Javier Milei announced that they plan to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to Manuel Adorni, spokesman for President Milei, Argentina's decision to leave the WHO was made after President Donald Trump's executive order on January 20 to withdraw the US from the WHO.

President Trump said that the WHO's management system during the COVID-19 pandemic was ineffective, while the US - the largest donor, still had to pay the funding costs "unfairly".

It is clear that the two leaders of the US and Argentina share the same political views. President Milei called Mr. Trump's re-election "the greatest political comeback in history", while the US president described his Argentine counterpart as "his favorite president".

President Milei's decision to withdraw Argentina from the WHO stems from similar arguments to the reasons for the US withdrawal from the organization.

Accordingly, Argentina withdrew from WHO due to "different views on health management, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic" of WHO, forcing Argentina to apply a prolonged blockade.

Not only that, the US and Argentina are both concerned about China's influence on this global health agency.

"The Argentine people will not allow an international organization to interfere with their sovereignty and the health of their people," spokesman Manuel Adorni said at a press conference.

Mr. Adorni argued that leaving the WHO would give Argentina more flexibility to implement policies that suit its interests and manage funds as Argentina sees fit.

Environmental activists in Argentina now fear that President Milei will follow in Trump's footsteps and initiate the process of withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement - an international pact to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
