Seasonal flu is a common infectious disease but can cause serious complications such as pneumonia, myocarditis, encephalitis, and even death, especially for the elderly, children, pregnant women, and people with underlying diseases.

According to the Ministry of Health's recommendations, people should proactively prevent seasonal flu by getting vaccinated, because now is a favorable time for respiratory infections, especially seasonal flu, to be at risk of a strong outbreak.

In Vietnam, each year there are 600,000 - 1,000,000 cases of seasonal flu.

According to the FPT Long Chau Vaccination Center, in early 2025, the number of customers coming for vaccination increased by 5% compared to the end of last year. In particular, the demand for influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations doubled in the past 1-2 months.

This is due to changes in weather and increased public awareness of the importance of proactive disease prevention in light of widespread outbreaks.

To meet customer needs, FPT Long Chau Vaccination Center has also implemented support programs, including influenza and pneumococcal vaccines, with discounts of up to 10%. This helps customers easily access high-quality vaccines at reasonable prices.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are about 1 billion cases of influenza each year, of which 3-5 million are severe and from 290,000 to 650,000 die.

In Vietnam, there are 600,000 - 1,000,000 cases of seasonal flu recorded each year. The key surveillance system for acute viral pneumonia in Vietnam still records cases of flu, with about 10% of flu patient samples testing positive for the A (H1N1) strain.

The A H1N1 flu virus can survive for quite a long time in the environment (outside), can live from 24-48 hours on surfaces such as tables, chairs, cabinets... or survive in clothes for 8-12 hours and can last for 5 minutes on the palm of the hand.

In particular, pathogens can survive for a long time in water, for example at 22°C, the virus can survive up to 4 days and live for several weeks at 0-4°C.

Swimming pools and public swimming spots can create an ideal environment for the A/H1N1 virus to thrive, especially during the rainy season, when humidity is high and there is a lack of sunlight to kill the virus. The flu virus can also survive all year at temperatures of -20°C and freeze-dried.

Influenza vaccination is the most effective way to prevent influenza and its dangerous complications. WHO reports that influenza vaccination can reduce influenza mortality by 70-80% and is 80-90% effective.

In particular, for patients with chronic diseases, vaccination can reduce hospitalization and death rates in cardiovascular patients by 35%, reduce death rates in diabetic patients by 58%, and reduce death rates in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by 70%.

Dr. Le Thanh Khoi, Head of the Medical Council of the FPT Long Chau Pharmacy System and Vaccination Center, said that flu can cause more severe symptoms than the common cold and can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia.

“To protect personal health, especially for high-risk groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with underlying diseases, proactively getting vaccinated against influenza is very important and should be done as soon as possible,” Mr. Khoi emphasized.

Typically, the flu causes symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, runny nose, sore throat, cough, and will resolve within 2-7 days.

However, the disease can become severe and fatal when the virus invades organs such as the lungs, heart muscle, brain, and leads to sepsis. High-risk groups such as people over 65 years old, pregnant women, young children, and people with underlying diseases such as cardiovascular disease, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, kidney failure, and diabetes will be at high risk of severe complications.

Currently, FPT Long Chau Vaccination Center provides two high-quality flu vaccines: Vaxigrip Tetra (produced in France by Sanofi) and Influvac Tetra (produced in the Netherlands by Abbott).

FPT Long Chau vaccination centers nationwide have received enough flu vaccines and preserved them according to the regulations of the Ministry of Health, ensuring to meet people's vaccination needs, especially during peak periods.

After actress Barbie Hsu died of complications from pneumonia caused by seasonal flu, experts recommend that people planning to travel abroad get a flu vaccine before departure and seek medical help if symptoms become severe while abroad.

Mike Kwan Yat-wah, president of the Asian Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases, said flu cases among children could increase as students return to school after the Lunar New Year holiday. He urged parents to trust science and get their children vaccinated quickly to prevent complications such as encephalitis.
