That is the Lu Ky chicken noodle restaurant of Mr. Quang Quoc Huy's family (46 years old) located in a peaceful alley on Nguyen Trai Street. Over the past 30 years, after inheriting the restaurant from his relatives, Mr. Huy has built this restaurant into a famous restaurant in Cho Lon area.
Table full of guests
One cool midweek afternoon, I went to Huy and his wife's restaurant, not too far from home. The restaurant opened at 3pm, and I arrived around 4pm and was surprised to see a crowd of customers, sitting at all the tables in the cozy space of the restaurant.
Even though it was only the middle of the week, the restaurant was crowded with customers.
Seeing my surprise, the owner smiled and said that this was not yet rush hour, and that by evening, there would be more customers. That was also the reason why not long ago, the restaurant opened a new spacious space a few meters away to serve customers comfortably.
Mr. Huy, his wife, relatives, and staff were busy, each doing their own thing, continuously making vermicelli, noodles, etc. so that customers would not have to wait long. Just like that, one group of customers after another continuously came in and out.
Confiding in us, the owner said that he started selling this restaurant more than 30 years ago, since 1991. Before that, the restaurant was opened by a relative of his, and was also popular. Later, the uncle's family moved to Australia to settle down, leaving him this restaurant to start a business.
Mr. Huy inherited the restaurant in 1991 and has been selling it until now.
[CLIP]: 40 years of chicken vermicelli in Cho Lon: The owner inherited his uncle's business from Australia, and it was packed with customers.
From here, he devoted all his youth to the restaurant, and even after having a wife and two children, his family still made a living from this profession. Ly Ngoc Phuong (47 years old), the wife of Huy next door, was also proud to hear that, because thanks to the family restaurant, they were able to raise their children to study properly, becoming the pride of their parents.
"The restaurant is crowded, you must have a special secret?", hearing my question, the owner slowly replied, most of them are regular customers who have been eating here for decades and love the taste of the dishes here. According to him, the dishes at the restaurant have a rich flavor, suitable for many people's taste, so customers support them. "The ingredients used are all the freshest. Customers will feel that," the owner introduced.
There are many different dishes sold here, but the most famous and popular is chicken vermicelli. Each portion at the restaurant is mid-range priced, the cheapest being 50,000 VND. Huy smiled and said there is no most expensive bowl, because the restaurant will accommodate customers as much as they want.
Eaten since childhood
Among the customers visiting the restaurant, there was Mr. Nguyen Nhat (28 years old) and his wife. He said that his family lives in District 8, and every time he craves chicken vermicelli or Chinese noodles, he will stop by this restaurant, because he has eaten there since he was a child.
Each meal here costs at least 50,000 VND.
The restaurant is located at 904/3 Nguyen Trai (District 5).
“In the past, when I was still in school, my parents took me to this restaurant to eat. What I ate was not only the food, but also the memories. When I was sad or happy, I also stopped by this alley and ate this dish, because I found peace in the Chinese restaurant. In Saigon, I like the two noodle shops the most, Ky Dong chicken noodle shop and Lu Ky chicken noodle shop," the customer confided.
Next door, Ms. Hoa (Mr. Nhat's wife) also said that since they first met, he often took her here to eat. Not a fan of vermicelli, she likes to eat noodles here, with soft, chewy noodles, clear broth, and a sweet aftertaste.
Accordingly, she often orders noodles with chicken gizzards and chicken thighs because that is her favorite dish. Served with sweet ginger dipping sauce, she rates the dish a worthy 9/10. The restaurant is also a memory of their love and they jokingly said that when they have children, the whole family will definitely come here to eat.
Mr. Huy said the restaurant's secret lies in fresh ingredients and cooking methods that suit customers' tastes.
Mr. Huy said the restaurant is open from 3pm to 11pm. Every day, he is happy to be attached to the restaurant, to bring the most dedicated meals to please the customers who have visited the restaurant for many years to support...
“For me, whether the restaurant is in an alley or on a street front is not too important. What is important is that when I cook delicious food and customers like it, no matter where I am, customers will come to me,” he added.
