Does eating a lot of rice wine make you drunk and harm your intestines?

VnExpressVnExpress23/06/2023

I heard that eating too much rice wine will make you drunk and cause stomach pain. Can you advise me, doctor? (Ha, 34 years old, Hanoi).

Sticky rice wine, also known as newly fermented rice wine, has many health benefits.

Yellow and black rice wine differ in the type of rice. Yellow rice wine uses yellow sticky rice (whole grain) to cook and ferment, while black rice wine uses purple sticky rice to cook and ferment. Each type of rice has different nutritional value, if only used in small amounts, people can use it according to their preferences.

Many studies have shown that rice wine is very good for digestion, cardiovascular health and helps lower blood cholesterol. Black sticky rice also contains high levels of the antioxidant anthocyanin - a substance that can fight cancer and cardiovascular disease. Sticky rice, especially black sticky rice, also contains quite high levels of iron, so eating black sticky rice regularly can also prevent iron deficiency. In particular, the fiber and acid in rice wine help prevent bloating, indigestion and improve digestion.

The intoxicating effect of fermented rice wine is low because the alcohol content in this food is at a minimum. However, people should not use much, each time should consume 80-100g of both water and solids. People should only use fermented rice wine for about three days because the longer the fermentation time, the more sugar is converted into alcohol, when eating, they can get drunk or face the risk of violating traffic laws because of the amount of alcohol in the breath.

In addition, avoid eating sticky rice wine on an empty stomach because the sour taste of the dish can easily increase acid, causing irritation of the stomach lining, increasing the risk of belching, heartburn, and stomach ulcers.
