The Huu Boc village drum dance team was established for a very simple reason: to provide the village with more cultural activities to improve the cultural life of the people. According to village chief Le Thanh Oai, the sound of festival drums has appeared in the village for a long time during festivals. However, at that time, drumming had not yet become a unique art form of the village. Until the village had a son who was an actor of the Thanh Hoa Tuong Art Troupe (now part of the Thanh Hoa Traditional Arts Theater), exchanged ideas and agreed with the village chief, the village drum team was established and he was the one who taught it.
Accordingly, the Huu Boc village drum dance team was established in 2010, consisting of 5 men and 10 women, the men holding the big drums, the women holding the small drums. Farmers who are used to plowing and hoing now have to practice holding drumsticks, creating rhythmic and methodical sounds, which is not an easy task. With the festival drums, the drummers must not only know the song but also know how to perform, combine the drum sounds, the beat with the dance to make the drum dance lively and attractive. In the first days of practice, the members all encountered many difficulties because they were all middle-aged, slow to learn, and the drum dances had many segments, if they did not remember, it would easily lead to incorrect rhythm and disordered beats.
At that time, every night, Huu Boc communal house was bustling and joyful, the sound of practice drums was bustling and many villagers came to watch and cheer. Although at that time, the practice drums were still in a chaotic rhythm, but because of love, that sound grew stronger in the hearts of each drum team member in particular and the people of Huu Boc village in general. From then on, they joined hands to buy practice tools, encouraged and created conditions for each other to perfect their practice.
Ms. Le Thi Dung, a member of the drum team, shared: “Learning to play the drum is not difficult but requires perseverance. Normally, people hold the drumstick at one end and hit the drum face with the other end, but when performing, the performer holds the stick in the middle and hits both ends, creating an attractive sound. In addition, there is a “conductor” who commands with a whistle and flags to control everything so that the sound of the festival drum blends with the graceful, rhythmic dances of the performers.”
Mr. Oai and 15 members still remember the first performance at the Ky Phuc festival in 2010. He said: That year, the village was the festival site in the district, with many guests. The festival opened with a special drum performance, all guests and people were convinced by the professionalism and uniqueness from the appeal of the art of drumming to the formation, team... performed by the farmers. The sound of the drum urged people's hearts, the drum sound resonated like the voice of the heart, contributing to the success of the festival.
The performance was successful beyond expectations, the sound of the Huu Boc village festival drums not only left a mark in the commune, becoming a "unique product" of the district, but also caused a big echo in other districts and towns. After that, the drum team was regularly invited to perform, attend major programs and events of the district, the province and exchange with other art clubs.
“Being able to bring the sound of Huu Boc village drums to participate in many major events of the province and the country, I and everyone else feel proud and excited. Although the art of festival drum dancing has only been associated with the village for 12 years, the sound of the drums represents the aspiration and pride of the farmers in the village. The village's festival drum dancing team is helping to spread good cultural values closer to everyone,” Mr. Oai affirmed.
Having created a unique culture, the people of Huu Boc village have become more aware and responsible for preserving and promoting this value. The proof is that the festival drum dance team has never lacked people, those who know how to play and perform the festival drum are not limited to 15 members but most of the middle-aged and elderly people in the village can play the right rhythm. Teaching takes place regularly at the village communal house, especially during the festival season when many young people come to learn.
Vice Chairwoman of Dong Ninh Commune People's Committee Le Thi Thuy said: "The birth of Huu Boc village drum dance team has enriched the spiritual life of the people, created a healthy community cultural atmosphere, contributed to enhancing the spirit of community solidarity, and promoted individual capacity. Thanks to the creative spirit, the drum sound has become a unique cultural feature of the village. This beauty has been and is being learned and followed by other villages in the commune."
