National Highway 51 connects the two provinces of Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Dong Nai, with very high traffic density, especially container trucks, trucks and motorbikes.
According to statistics, in the beginning, Highway 51 had about 25,000 vehicles per day and night. But now the traffic volume reaches 40,000 - 60,000 vehicles per day and night during rush hours. Although regularly repaired, this route is still degraded, with bumps and depressions often appearing on many sections.
It is worth mentioning that in recent years, traffic accidents have frequently occurred on National Highway 51, causing many deaths, which has become a nightmare for people and drivers traveling on the road. Mr. Le Thanh Phong, a container truck driver, said that because he picks up goods at Cai Mep - Thi Vai port area, he often travels on this route to return to Ho Chi Minh City. "The most haunting thing is in the afternoons when workers get off work, students get off school, vehicles continuously cross the road, while container trucks are carrying heavy goods, if they do not react in time, traffic accidents can easily occur" - Mr. Phong said.

According to statistics, in 2024, the number of traffic accidents on National Highway 51 tends to decrease, but the number of deaths and serious injuries has not shown any signs of decreasing. Traffic accidents often focus on high traffic density roads such as seaport intersections or roads under construction or upgrading. The main reasons are limited awareness of people in complying with the Road Traffic Law, the prevalence of overloaded and oversized vehicles, and the traffic infrastructure not meeting the demand.
According to the Traffic Police Department of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, the traffic situation on National Highway 51 is still complicated, with potential risks of accidents. Therefore, the unit has regularly arranged forces to patrol and regulate traffic during rush hours and holidays. Specialized teams to handle violations of speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, and alcohol concentration violations are regularly deployed. In particular, from 2021 to present, National Highway 51 has had a smart traffic camera system. Therefore, traffic accidents will be collected and studied to clarify the causes of the accidents, from which the traffic police will have solutions to fundamentally reduce traffic accidents.
