Egypt-EU discuss Sudan situation and Russia-Ukraine conflict

On June 19, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi met with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in Cairo.

Mr. Ahmed Fahmy, spokesman for the Egyptian President, said that the meeting between Mr. El-Sisi and Mr. Borrell was attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and top officials of the European Commission (EC).

During the meeting, President El-Sisi stressed that the EU plays an important role in Cairo's foreign policy, the 27-member bloc is Egypt's leading trade partner and shares common challenges on both sides of the Mediterranean.

For his part, Mr. Josep Borrell highly appreciated the special relationship between the two sides, while emphasizing Cairo's political influence in the region and on the international stage. According to Mr. Borrell, with its key role in regional security and peace, Egypt is an extremely important strategic partner of the EU.

Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations, dialogue and cooperation between the two sides, especially in the fight against terrorism and illegal migration.

President El-Sisi and Mr. Borrell discussed the current coordination between Egypt and the EU on international and regional issues, including the situation in Sudan.

According to Mr. Borrell, Europe appreciates Cairo's efforts in receiving refugees and encouraging a ceasefire between parties in Sudan.

The two sides also discussed the Palestinian cause and agreed to continue efforts to achieve peace and resolve the conflict in accordance with international regulations to restore the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and support security and development in the region.

The two sides also discussed the latest developments related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Egyptian leader stressed the importance of strengthening international efforts to limit the economic impact of this crisis globally.

Regarding the Sudan issue, on the same day, at a joint press conference with Mr. Borrell, Egyptian Foreign Minister Shoukry said that the country has opened its doors to receive up to 250,000 Sudanese refugees since the conflict broke out in mid-April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

For his part, Mr. Borrell said that the EU will provide 100 million Euros in support to facilitate Egypt's reception of more refugees from Sudan.
