The population of 57 ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees is 100 - 200 years old. The trees have an average diameter of 25 - 40 cm and a height of 3 - 5 m. This ancient tea population is being managed by Co Do Tea Joint Stock Company and is identified as a source of mother trees for the development of the Shan Tuyet tea area in the future.
At the ceremony, the People's Committee of Moc Chau district pledged to strictly protect the population of 57 ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees according to regulations on protecting Vietnamese heritage trees and to take good care to preserve the precious genetic resources of the endemic tea variety of Moc Chau plateau.
At the same time, Moc Chau District People's Committee assigned Co Do Tea Joint Stock Company to research and develop a plan to exploit the value of the area of 57 ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees and develop tea varieties associated with tourism activities to promote the potential, advantages and economic efficiency of tea trees.
Moc Chau is a district located in the Southeast of Son La province. Currently, the whole district has over 2,100 hectares of tea, with an annual output of over 25,000 tons of fresh buds. Since 2010, the Intellectual Property Office has granted a certificate of geographical indication in Vietnam for Moc Chau Shan Tuyet tea.
The recognition of ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees as Vietnam Heritage Trees not only contributes to preserving biodiversity but also preserving national culture, while enhancing the brand of Shan Tuyet tea in Moc Chau district.
The event to honor and preserve Vietnam Heritage Trees was initiated and implemented by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment since 2010. To date, more than 7,000 ancient trees and many tree populations distributed in 55 provinces and cities across the country have been recognized as Vietnam Heritage Trees.
The activity has received widespread support and participation from the community and local authorities, contributing to promoting propaganda and raising social awareness of protecting natural landscapes and the environment, and promoting sustainable socio-economic development.
