About 40 people were killed in two terrorist attacks in northwestern Burkina Faso over the weekend.
Local authorities confirmed the first attack on an armed convoy near Bourasso in the Boucle du Mouhoun region on May 27, but did not provide information on the number of people killed.
A local source said about 20 people, including soldiers, died in the attack. Meanwhile, the Burkina Faso Information Agency said 18 wounded soldiers were receiving medical care.

On the same day, local media reported that about 20 other people were killed in another attack on May 28 in Wakara, also in the northwest of the country.
A security source said that Burkina Faso's defense and security forces killed dozens of terrorists after the above attacks.
In a speech on May 30, Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem de Tambela of Burkina Faso announced the creation of six rapid intervention battalions, six gendarmerie corps and two new air bases, as well as the recruitment of 6,000 additional soldiers. The head of the Burkina Faso government reaffirmed the country's commitment to fighting terrorism and "never negotiating with armed terrorist groups."
Since 2015, insecurity in Burkina Faso has claimed many lives and forced thousands of others to flee their homes.
