Colombian rescuers found the four young victims (the oldest was 13 years old and the youngest was 11 months old) by following traces such as crushed wild berries, and items such as hair ties, shoes, clothes, milk bottles... left along the road.
More than 100 rescuers, three helicopters and sniffer dogs searched the dense forest for days and discovered a makeshift shelter made of tree branches, further confirming the hypothesis that at least one person survived. The Operation Hope team carried a loudspeaker capable of broadcasting sounds within a 1,500-meter range, along with a message recorded by the children's grandmother in the local Huitoto language to keep them from wandering through the forest and waiting for rescue. The area where the children were lost is difficult to reach by river and has no highway.
The plane crash on May 1 killed three people, including the pilot and the mother of the four children. The Cessna 206 was found upside down at the scene and experts speculated that the crew may have tried to land on the giant trees in an emergency. Initial investigation results showed that the plane crashed due to engine failure. So far, authorities have not provided further details about the search process or the health status of these children after the terrible adventure in the forest full of wild animals.
