4 dietary adjustments to help protect your kidneys

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/12/2023

Creatinine is produced by the breakdown of muscle. Like many other waste products, the kidneys filter creatinine and remove it from the body. However, abnormally high levels of creatinine in the blood are a sign of kidney disease, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).

Eating vegetables and avoiding too much red meat will help reduce pressure on the kidneys.

In normal people, creatinine levels range from 0.5 to 1.2 mg/dl. Creatinine levels above 1.2 mg/dl indicate kidney failure. One of the biggest problems with kidney failure is that there are no early signs other than increased creatinine in the blood.

To protect the kidneys, experts recommend making the following adjustments in the diet:

Don't eat too much protein

Many studies have shown that eating too much protein can affect creatinine levels in the blood. Red meat is a high-protein food. People who eat a lot of red meat or other protein-rich foods such as milk and eggs may have higher creatinine levels than normal people.

To reduce pressure on the kidneys, experts recommend switching to plant-based dishes instead of eating too much red meat.

Eat more fiber

Fiber is one of the important substances that help the body function harmoniously. Many research evidences show that people who eat a lot of fiber have significantly lower blood creatinine levels. Fiber is abundant in foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans.

Reduce salt intake

Salt is necessary for the body, but eating too much will increase blood pressure and put pressure on the kidneys. Processed foods such as cold cuts and canned foods are not only high in salt but also contain phosphorus. Eating too much of these two substances increases the risk of kidney problems. Instead, replace them with foods of natural origin such as fruits and vegetables.

Stop drinking alcohol

Drinking too much alcohol not only impairs kidney function but also increases the risk of many other related diseases. Studies show that drinking too much alcohol over a long period of time not only damages the liver but also the kidneys, even causing severe kidney failure, according to Medical News Today .
