Figures just released by the General Statistics Office show that international visitors to Vietnam in March were estimated at 895,400, a decrease of 4% compared to the previous month and 21.5 times higher than the same period last year.
In the first quarter of 2023, the number of international visitors to our country is estimated to reach nearly 2.7 million, 29.7 times higher than the same period in 2022 but still only 60% compared to the same period in 2019 - the year before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking to the press, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Pham Van Thuy said that the number of domestic and international tourists to Vietnam in the first 3 months of the year has increased, showing positive signs and the target of 8 million international visitors this year is feasible. This is even more feasible as we are about to enter the domestic tourism season and many major cultural events are being held.
In fact, in just the first 3 months of the year, Vietnam has welcomed 30% of the target set for the whole year. Meanwhile, we still have 3 more quarters to welcome 5.3 million visitors, equivalent to about 1.76 million international visitors/quarter. This number is too low, Vietnam is more than capable of reaching and exceeding 8 million visitors as planned.
Regarding the arrival market, Chinese visitors are showing signs of warming up as this country opened its doors to group visitors to Vietnam from March 15. However, it takes time for businesses of both countries and partners to re-study the market, prepare products, personnel, promote, etc., so it is likely that from April to May, this number of visitors will recover. Therefore, in the first quarter, Vietnam only welcomed 140,233 Chinese visitors.
South Korea has emerged as the leading market for tourists to Vietnam. In the first three months of the year, nearly 811,000 South Korean tourists 'checked in' to Vietnam.
This number is expected to increase as charter flights are still bringing visitors in large numbers. On the morning of March 28, the first charter flight of Vietravel Airlines carrying more than 200 passengers, departing from Daegu City, South Korea, landed at Cam Ranh Airport (Khanh Hoa). The airline's series of 11 charter flights is expected to bring more than 2,200 Korean visitors to Nha Trang, with a frequency of 5 flights per day.
Khanh Hoa province alone welcomed more than 100,000 Korean visitors in the first two months of the year. However, this number is still very small compared to the 30,000 visitors the locality welcomed in the first quarter of 2019.
After Korea is the US market with approximately 207,000 visitors to Vietnam in the first quarter. Thailand, China, Taiwan (China), Japan, Malaysia, etc. are the next markets in the top 10 markets with the most visitors to Vietnam in the first 3 months of the year.
