On December 23 in Hanoi, the Vietnam Science and Technology Journalists Club announced the results of the vote for 10 outstanding science and technology events in 2024.
The 10 outstanding events of science and technology in 2024 were voted as follows:
1. Agree on the policy to restart the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project
On November 25, the 13th Party Central Committee Conference agreed on the policy of restarting the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project and continuing to research the nuclear power program in Vietnam.
On November 30, at the 8th session of the 15th National Assembly, the National Assembly passed a resolution to continue implementing the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project.
Previously, on November 25, 2009, the 12th National Assembly passed Resolution No. 41/2009/QH12 approving the investment policy of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project, including plants 1 and 2, with a total capacity of 4,000 MW.
However, on November 26, 2016, the National Assembly issued Resolution No. 31/2016/QH14 to stop implementing the investment policy for the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plant project.
2. Issue the Strategy for developing Vietnam's semiconductor industry to 2030 and vision to 2050
On September 21, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed Decision No. 1018/QD-TTg promulgating the Strategy for developing Vietnam's semiconductor industry to 2030 and vision to 2050.
The strategy for developing the semiconductor industry in Vietnam until 2050 follows a 3-phase roadmap. In which, phase 1 (2024 - 2030) sets a target of reaching the revenue scale of the semiconductor industry in Vietnam to over 25 billion USD/year, the human resource scale reaches over 50,000 engineers and bachelors with appropriate structure and quantity, meeting development needs.
3. Implement the policy of merging the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Information and Communications
On December 6, the Government issued a plan to reorganize and streamline the Government's apparatus with the orientation of maintaining 8 ministries and ministerial-level agencies (with internal reorganization and streamlining), and at the same time reorganizing and merging 14 ministries and ministerial-level agencies. Including merging the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Information and Communications.
4. Announcement of local innovation index
On March 12, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced the local innovation index and the 2023 local innovation rankings of 63 provinces and cities, of which Hanoi achieved the highest score, followed by Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong.
5. Institute of Geophysics masters earthquake monitoring and reporting technology
The Institute of Geophysics – Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology – is the focal point assigned to perform the task of reporting earthquakes and warning of tsunamis in Vietnam according to Government regulations.
To serve this work, the Institute of Geophysics is currently operating nearly 100 earthquake monitoring stations in Vietnam's territory and territorial waters.
6. Viettel operates the largest data center in Vietnam
In April 2024, the Military Industry-Telecoms Group (Viettel) will put into operation the Viettel Hoa Lac Data Center with a capacity of 30MW, the largest in Vietnam. Viettel deploys the latest technologies to build a green data center.
This is Vietnam's first data center designed with high capacity, twice the average, to meet the development trend of AI with requirements for high-performance chips, increasing computing capacity.
7. Techfest 2024 and 10 years of developing Vietnam's creative startup ecosystem
The National Innovation and Startup Festival 2024 (Techfest 2024) took place in Hai Phong city from November 26 to 28. In its 10th edition, Techfest 2024 marked remarkable achievements with nearly 10,000 attendees; gathering more than 1,100 leading speakers and experts.
8. FPT builds artificial intelligence center worth more than 4,300 billion VND
On August 18, FPT Quy Nhon Joint Venture (under FPT Group) in coordination with the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province officially started the project of AI center and auxiliary urban area in Quy Nhon city.
The project covers an area of over 93.2 hectares, with a total investment of VND4,362 billion. The AI Center is identified as a place for research, training, software production, digital transformation support, and providing network security and social security solutions.
9. Discovery of 8,000-year-old prehistoric settlement in Bac Kan
In August 2024, the Vietnam Archaeological Association and the Bac Kan Provincial Museum discovered many traces of prehistoric people at 4 relics in more than 20 caves in two communes of Quang Khe and Dong Phuc, Ba Be district (Bac Kan province) after more than a month of field work.
Initially, the survey team determined that Kem Liem Cave is a prehistoric human settlement from the early stage of the Neolithic period, dating back about 7,000 – 8,000 years ago. In some other caves, the survey results were similar.
10. The first Vietnamese person to win the Taiwan (China) international astronomy award
Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Chi Thiem (45 years old, currently working at the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute and Korea University of Science and Technology) won the 2024 World Young Astronomer Lecture Award presented by Central University in Taiwan.
He is the first Vietnamese and the fourth person working in Asia to win this award.
