With over 90 million visitors, France is the most visited country in the world.
World Population Review (WPR), an independent organization on population and demographic surveys in the US, announced the list of the 10 countries that welcome the most visitors in 2023 in October. The ranking is based on data provided by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNTWO) in 2019, not counting data from subsequent years due to the impact of the pandemic.
The 10 most visited destinations in the world include: France (90 million), Spain (83.7 million), the US (79.3 million), China (65.7 million), Italy (64.5 million), Türkiye (51.2 million), Mexico (45 million), Thailand (39.8 million), Germany (39.6 million), the UK (39.4 million).

According to the latest UNWTO Barometer, based on 2022 data, the top 10 most visited countries in the world remain unchanged. France remains the most visited country with 48.4 million visitors. The next names include: Mexico (31.9 million), Spain (31.2 million), Turkey (29.9 million), Italy (26.9 million), the US (22.1 million), Greece (14.7 million), Australia (12.7 million), Germany (11.7 million), UAE (11.5 million). China is not on the list because it will not open to international visitors until early 2023.
As the world's most popular tourist destination for over 30 years according to WPR, France has many attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Côte d'Azur with its long beaches and beautiful countryside. The capital Paris is also the most visited city in Europe and the second most visited in the world with over 19 million visitors. The top is the capital of Thailand, Bangkok with over 22 million visitors.

WPR also listed the 10 least visited destinations in the world, including: Tuvalu (2,700 visitors), Marshall Islands (6,100 visitors), Niue (10,200), Kiribati (12,000), Micronesia (18,000), Montserrat (British Overseas Territory - 19,300), Solomon Islands (29,000), Sao Tome & Principe (34,900), Comoros (45,000), Guinea-Bissau (52,000).
According to tourism experts, there are many reasons why the 10 places listed above are among the least visited in the world: they are not popular, are remote and difficult to access, are expensive, and lack attractive attractions despite being easy to get to. Some other places have limitations in infrastructure, services, are too small to accommodate many tourists, or have unstable political situations.
According to UNTWO, international tourism is expected to recover strongly in 2022 (63%) and 2023 (84%) compared to 2019, with Europe, the Americas and the Middle East leading the recovery. More than 917 million international tourists travelled last year. In the first seven months of this year, that number was 700 million.
In 2022, Europe recorded 585 million visitors, reaching nearly 80% compared to 2019. The Middle East welcomed 83% of the number of visitors before the pandemic, while Africa and the Americas both recovered about 65% compared to 2019. Asia - Pacific only reached 23% due to many countries applying strict epidemic restrictions and reopening to welcome visitors late.
Although not yet at pre-pandemic levels, this is considered a remarkable recovery and bodes well for 2023.
