David Hoffmann (from the US) is a YouTube content creator with a personal channel that attracts more than 1.3 million followers. He regularly posts videos about his travel experiences in every country he has the opportunity to visit.

Last September, David came to Vietnam for the first time and chose Hanoi as his stopover to experience street food. When the tour guide took him to the sticky rice stall at the intersection of Hang Bai and Ly Thuong Kiet, the Western visitor was surprised.

This is a familiar culinary address for many Hanoians, impressing with the harmonious flavor of sticky rice, fatty sauce, smooth green beans and fried onions. In addition to sticky rice, the restaurant also sells corn sticky rice.

In particular, the shop once caused a "fever" on Korean television and became famous on social networks thanks to the seller's "lightning-fast" sticky rice wrapping.

At this point, David kept exclaiming “so crowded”, “packed”, unable to hide his curiosity about what this dish was that attracted so many diners. “She (the owner) made it so fast. This dish is like rice with mashed potatoes”, he commented.

David was given a detailed explanation of the ingredients for making xoi xeo by the tour guide. The American YouTuber even enthusiastically learned how to order the dish in Vietnamese: “Em oi, cho anh mot xoi xeo full topping (roughly translated: full of side dishes).”

After a few minutes of waiting, the food was served. David was surprised by the eye-catching appearance of the sticky rice dish, complete with ingredients such as sticky rice, fatty sausage, braised pork, dried pork floss, fried eggs and fried onions.

He tasted the sticky rice and the side dishes one by one, constantly expressing surprise because the flavor of each ingredient was so appealing.

“The sticky rice is so delicious, the braised pork is so tender, it tastes like pork ribs. This is a truly unique dish, with many ingredients and different textures. I like this fatty braised pork the most,” David shared his feelings.

The YouTuber with millions of views happily said that this is not only a culinary destination but also gives visitors an interesting experience when seeing people lining up in large, bustling lines to order sticky rice.

“I heard the shop owner, the staff around me, and the customers coming to buy sticky rice. I couldn’t understand what they were saying, but it was really bustling.”

Finishing his breakfast with sticky rice, David admitted that he was full and had many compliments for this breakfast dish.

Sharing with VietNamNet reporter, Ms. Pham Ngoc Anh - owner of the sticky rice shop that David visited said that her family's sticky rice shop opened 31 years ago. She is the second generation to succeed her mother, taking over the sticky rice selling job for 12 years now.

Ms. Ngoc Anh also expressed her joy and pride when her family's sidewalk sticky rice shop has been supported by many Hanoi diners and foreign guests for many years.

According to this woman, the ingredients for making xoi xeo are all carefully selected and processed by her family, such as frying onions and stir-frying pork floss. The sausage is imported from the famous Uoc Le ham, making the xoi xeo dish more delicious and attractive.

Each portion of sticky rice here currently costs between 15,000 - 30,000 VND, depending on the type and portion.
