Speaking to a reporter from Dan Viet newspaper, a student at Trung Nhi Secondary School, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi said that for the past two weeks, a person has appeared selling turtles and snails right in front of the school gate and many students have bought them.
"I see this person selling many different types and after school my friends often come to see and buy. Among them, snails are sold the most because they are cheap, about 10,000 VND/each.
However, when I got closer, I discovered that she was also selling red-eared sliders. This type costs 30,000 VND each. Some of my friends bought them to raise at home and some of my friends who couldn't raise them released them," said this student.

When asked about the red-eared slider, the female student shared that she learned about this species from watching the news on TV and expressed great concern if the sliders were released into the lake.
Parents are also worried when semi-aquatic animals are sold right at the school gate: "Red-eared sliders are invasive alien animals. If they receive sliders, the forestry department will destroy them according to regulations. I don't understand why this turtle is openly sold right in front of the school gate. Students who are not equipped with enough knowledge will buy them as pets. This is a ferocious omnivorous species. This turtle species has been warned about by authorities for decades. I hope the authorities will strictly handle this behavior."

Sharing about this issue, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Lan Hung Son, Head of the Department of Biology, Hanoi National University of Education, Vice President of the Vietnam Ecology Association, said: "The red-eared slider is one of the typical invasive alien animals and according to Circular 35/2018 of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the red-eared slider is classified as an invasive alien species, belonging to the amphibians - reptiles group".
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Lan Hung Son, although not harmful to students, in terms of education, it is not okay to sell them in front of the school gate. Because this is an invasive alien species that has become a pet for children.
In addition, Associate Professor Dr. Son noted to parents when letting their children raise "pets": "Parents need to ensure safety and control when their children raise pets such as mice, birds, dogs, cats... At the same time, parents must guide their children to have safety measures when in contact".
