Chayote and carrots are nutritious agricultural products, 3-star OCOP products, grown in abundance in Quynh Lien commune, Hoang Mai town, Nghe An province. After Tet, the prices of these two agricultural products suddenly "fell freely", making farmers here worried. The reason is that the main market has sharply reduced consumption.
Quynh Lien Commune, Hoang Mai Town is known as the largest specialized area for growing chayote and carrots in Nghe An Province. The total area for growing chayote in Quynh Lien Commune is about 60 to 70 hectares. Meanwhile, the whole commune also has about 65 hectares. These are two main crops of the locality.

Farmers in Quynh Lien commune also invested in a solid trellis system to grow chayote. In addition, carrot fields are also equipped with automatic irrigation systems to reduce labor and increase productivity. Farmers mainly grow chayote and carrots using organic methods to ensure clean and safe products for consumers.
Chayote and carrots are very suitable for the soil and climate in Quynh Lien commune, so they give high yield and quality. Chayote plants give an average yield of 120 to 140 tons/ha.

After Tet, the price of carrots and chayote "fell freely". The price of carrots at 11,000 VND - 12,000 VND/kg "fell" to only 3,000 VND/kg. Photo: Ng.A
The local government also focuses on supporting local farmers in building brands for these two key products. Thanks to that, chayote and carrots in Quynh Lien commune have also been recognized as 3-star OCOP products. After harvesting, chayote and carrots in Quynh Lien commune are purchased by traders, transported and consumed in the main market of Hanoi city.
However, after the Lunar New Year, the price of chayote and carrots began to "fall freely". At times, the price of chayote was only about 200 to 300 VND/kg. Even after harvest, chayote could not be sold, making farmers worried.

"Before Tet, the price of chayote was 5,000 VND to 6,000 VND/kg. With this price, local people were very excited. However, after that, the main market in Hanoi began to reduce consumption because workers, students and pupils returned to their hometowns for Tet. This led to a situation where chayote and carrots were in stock and prices dropped. After "hitting bottom", the price of chayote also started to increase to 500 VND/kg. It is expected that in the coming time, when the market stabilizes again, the price of chayote will continue to increase," said Mr. Hoang Ngoc Anh - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quynh Lien commune.
Not only chayote, other vegetables and fruits in Quynh Lien commune also have sharp price drops. In particular, the price of carrots was at 11,000 VND to 12,000 VND/kg before Tet, now it is only about 3,000 VND/kg.
The Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quynh Lien Commune said: Despite the low price, people still harvest chayote to wait for traders to buy. Because chayote if left "hanging" on the trellis will rot and be damaged. Besides, too many fruits will damage the trellis. After harvesting, people also have good preservation methods to ensure the quality of the fruit after harvesting while waiting for the market. The locality will continue to contact the main points to find consumption directions for farmers.
