Mr. Chin Tuc picks up trash at the seven-color stone beach, Binh Thanh commune, Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province.
That man is Mr. Le Thanh Tuc (58 years old), residing in Hamlet 2, Binh Thanh Commune, Tuy Phong District, Binh Thuan Province. People here affectionately call him Mr. Chin Tuc. For more than a year now, Mr. Tuc has kept his love for the sea and his homeland in his own way - he is a "garbage collector on the rocky beach".
Ca Duoc rock beach was formed hundreds of years ago, stretching nearly 1.5 km along the coast of Binh Thanh, and was zoned for protection by the provincial and local authorities with a total area of 10 hectares. Due to the impact of tides, ocean currents, seawater and rocks pushed up by the waves from year to year, the natural 7-color rock beach was formed. This place is recognized as a provincial-level scenic relic; it was recognized by the Vietnam Record Book Center as "The rock beach with the most shapes and colors in Vietnam" and is one of the 13 most beautiful rock beaches in the country.
Because of the uniqueness combined with the scenic mossy Co Thach beach and beautiful beach, locals and tourists often come here to have fun, swim, and take photos. This comes with a lot of waste released into the environment. In addition, ocean trash washed ashore by the waves causes a lot of waste on the rocky beach.
Love for the sea, love for nature and obsession with garbage have brought this man to a special job. Mr. Chin Tuc knows this place like the back of his hand, he knows what time of day and what month the tide will bring garbage to which area for easy collection. Because of his love for his homeland, more than anyone else, Mr. Chin Tuc cannot stand the sight of garbage surrounding the seven-color rock beach.
Mr. Chin Tuc still silently picks up trash every day at the 7-color landfill.
Talking to us, Mr. Chin Tuc shared: “Our sea is so beautiful, so clear; the rocky beach is also so beautiful and unique, rarely found anywhere else. Born and attached to the rocky beach for most of my life, I cannot ignore the colorful pebbles here being covered by plastic bags and ocean waste. So if I have the strength, I will do it, considering this job as a joy. Thanks to it, I can work, have better health; who knows, from my work, many people will follow suit.”
Every day, after waking up, around 4-5 o'clock every morning, Mr. Chin Tuc goes to the sea, to the rocky beach to pick up trash. He spends 2 hours doing the job that many people consider "eating at home and carrying a prison and a village". After picking up trash along the rocky beach, he goes down to the beach to pick up bottles, fishing gear that the waves brought to shore. After that, he returns to busy himself with his family's livelihood. Mr. Chin Tuc's trash-picking tools always include a headlamp, a bag and a styrofoam box tied to his waist for easy garbage collection. Even though he is dragging a trash can of more than ten kilos, this man who only weighs about 55 kg still nimbly walks along the rocky beach to pick up trash. His every day starts like that, quietly and persistently.
Mr. Chin Tuc said: “The first days of doing this job, my back was very painful, especially my ten fingertips were sore and calloused, but I got used to it. There was little human strength, but a lot of trash. There were many days when I had just finished picking it up, and the next morning it was the same as before. Strong waves swept a lot of ocean trash to the shore and seemed to wash away all my efforts. But it was okay, I still did it, simply because this place needed me and I loved this place.”
After more than a year of doing this unique job, Mr. Chin Tuc has also experienced many times of gossip; he was considered an abnormal person. But he ignored it and continued to work silently. And then, gradually, his family and many people understood him better, turned to support and accompany him.
“At first, I told my wife and children that I was going to the beach, not picking up trash. Later, on cold windy days and big sea days, I went to the beach regularly, so my family found out. In addition, many people took photos and videos and posted them on social media, so my wife and children found out. Luckily, no one objected, on the contrary, they happily supported me; they just advised me to take care of my health and not to overwork myself. What’s more fun is that some people who were swimming here also joined me in picking up trash,” said Mr. Chin Tuc.
Mr. Chin Tuc dragged the trash can to the garbage disposal site.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuoi, a resident of Binh Thanh Commune, Tuy Phong District, said: People here are no longer unfamiliar with the image of Uncle Chin Tuc at the rock beach. At first, many people thought he was too idle, but later they felt sorry for and admired him. On days when he had free time from work, he and some other people here also helped him, but he was the most persistent and patient person.
According to the Management Board of Binh Thanh Tourist Area, in the past time, the Management Board has deployed 3 key groups of solutions to protect the Ca Duoc Stone Beach Relic Site, including: Preserving and preventing stone theft; rescue work on the beach and ensuring environmental hygiene of the stone beach. Regarding the issue of environmental protection of waste, the Management Board has arranged many trash cans and foam boxes for tourists to dispose of waste properly. In addition, there is a type of ocean trash that drifts in. When the amount of trash drifts in is large, the Management Board hires people to collect and process it, but there are times when the amount of trash is too large to handle.
Mr. Ho Cong Tien, Director of Binh Thanh Tourist Area Management Board, said: Mr. Chin Tuc is a shining example, a typical example in the movement of maintaining hygiene and collecting waste. Every day, at dawn, Mr. Chin Tuc is here, alone picking up trash from the beginning to the end of the landfill. Hopefully, the image of Mr. Chin Tuc will spread to the people and tourists to take action to protect the rock beach in particular and the environment in general.
Mr. Chin Tuc's action is just a small one but it has a very big meaning; not only does it help make Ca Duoc rock beach cleaner and more beautiful, but it also helps spread the love of nature and awareness of environmental protection to tourists when they come to this place.
