On the evening of February 16, Mr. Tran Tan Loi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Xuan Commune, Phu Tan District, An Giang Province, informed that the charity ambulance of the People's Committee of the commune caught fire on the way to transport a patient to the hospital.
The ambulance was badly damaged after the fire.
According to him, the ambulance was funded by the local government two years ago. This is a specialized vehicle with full equipment, worth about 800 million VND.
The hospital transfer service is completely free for people in the commune and neighboring communes. The driver team is mobilized by the local people to participate, and does not receive any remuneration.
Previously, at around 10:30 a.m. on February 16, driver Vo Van Cop Em (42 years old, driving a specialized ambulance) picked up a 59-year-old female patient at group 5, Phu Dong hamlet, Phu Xuan commune.
The car had moved 10 meters when suddenly the medical oxygen tank on the car exploded, spreading the fire to nearby objects.
The driver and his family immediately took the patient out of the car. Seeing the accident, people on the roadside used available tools to put out the fire but were unsuccessful, the car was badly damaged.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire in about 30 minutes. The fire caused minor burns to the patient's hand and he was taken to a nearby medical facility for first aid.
The other ambulance patients were taken to the district hospital.
