On June 13, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu, in charge of the cycling department of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training and General Secretary of the Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation, said that athlete Nguyen Thi That has officially won a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Nguyen Thi That (middle) successfully defended the gold medal in the women's mass start event.
"After Nguyen Thi That won the Asian gold medal, we had to wait for the International Cycling Union (UCI) to recognize this result along with the ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
UCI has not officially responded to the Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation, but through discussions, UCI's international referees who are running the Asian tournament confirmed that the Vietnamese women's cycling team officially has a place to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics," said Mr. Vu.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi That also appeared very emotional after becoming the first Vietnamese athlete to have a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"Right now I just want to burst into tears because I have reached a dream that I thought I would never have," athlete Nguyen Thi That expressed.
Previously, on June 12, four Vietnamese athletes, Nguyen Thi Thu Mai, Nguyen Thi Thi, Nguyen Thi That and Tran Thi Thuy Trang, entered the women's mass start event for the team with a route of 109km.
During the race, the Vietnamese cycling team faced many difficulties due to fierce competition from opponents from China, Korea and Kazakhstan.
In the last 40km, despite many difficulties, the Vietnamese cycling team still maintained a reasonable strategy.
In the last 200m, the hope Nguyen Thi That accelerated impressively, surpassing Sun Jiajun (China) and Jutatip (Thailand) to finish first with a time of 2 hours 51 minutes 41 seconds, thereby successfully defending the gold medal.
This is the third time Nguyen Thi That has won the continental pageant, after 2018 and 2022.
Also on the morning of June 12, the Vietnamese cycling team won another gold medal thanks to Thach Thi Ngoc Thao in the youth category, 46km distance.
