On December 27, the Department of Health of Ba Ria - Vung Tau concluded the cases of alcohol poisoning at the KQT snakehead fish noodle shop (Ward 11, Vung Tau City). The poisoning incident occurred on December 21.
The remaining alcohol was drunk by the victims.
Accordingly, after the incident occurred, the Department of Food Safety and Hygiene of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province sent samples to the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Public Health for testing. Including 10 alcohol samples tested for methanol and acetonitrile; 4 serum and plasma samples of patients taken from Vung Tau Hospital tested for methanol.
Alcohol samples were taken from five alcohol trading establishments and the residences of victims involved in the alcohol poisoning incident.
Results from the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Public Health showed that three wine samples detected methanol and exceeded the allowable methanol content in wine many times.
Specifically, the white wine sample at the snakehead fish noodle shop had a content of 4,706,811 mg/l of 100o ethanol, 2,353 times higher than the permitted level; the white wine sample at the Chinese grocery store had a content of 599,505 mg/l of 100o ethanol, 300 times higher than the permitted level; the colored wine sample at the patients' homes had a content of 822,699 mg/l of 100o ethanol, 411 times higher than the permitted level.
Through analysis by the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Public Health, the serum and plasma of all four victims in the alcohol poisoning case had methanol levels exceeding the permissible threshold (greater than 200µg/ml).
The Department of Health concluded that the alcohol poisoning incident at the KQT snakehead fish noodle shop with 4 people infected was a food poisoning case caused by the victims drinking white wine purchased from a Chinese grocery store (Ward 11, Vung Tau City) owned by Ms. NHT.
