Le Thi Mong Tuyen ranked fifth in the 10m air rifle event at the 2024 Asian Shooting Championship this afternoon, January 10, thereby winning a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Le Thi Mong Tuyen celebrates ticket to Paris Olympics 2024.
Vietnam had three shooters competing with 59 athletes from other countries and territories in the 10m air rifle event. In the qualifying round, Mong Tuyen scored 627.8 points to enter the final, while her two teammates Phi Thanh Thao (625.2 points) and Nguyen Thi Thao (615.5 points) were eliminated.
Of the eight shooters who made it to the finals, five have already secured a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The remaining two spots are therefore a battle between Mong Tuyen and Amini Pozveh (Iran) and Huiyi Tan (Singapore). The Vietnamese shooter scored a total of 188.7 points after six rounds. She finished above both of her direct opponents to secure a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Mong Tuyen is the second Vietnamese shooter to win a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics. Previously, Trinh Thu Vinh won the first spot when she ranked fifth in the final of the women's 10m air pistol event at the 2023 World Shooting Championship.
The 2024 Asian Shooting Championship will take place in Indonesia from January 4 to January 18. The Vietnamese shooting team participating in the tournament is led by head coach Park Chung Gun, including 11 shooters: Trinh Thu Vinh, Nguyen Thuy Trang (women's pistol), Pham Quang Huy, Lai Cong Minh, Phan Cong Minh, Ha Minh Thanh, Vu Tien Nam, Phan Xuan Chuyen (men's pistol), Le Thi Mong Tuyen, Phi Thanh Thao, Nguyen Thi Thao (women's rifle).
Before Mong Tuyen won a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics, the duo Pham Quang Huy and Trinh Thu Vinh won a gold medal in the 10m mixed pistol event on January 9. However, this event does not count as an Olympic ticket.
Vietnamese sports only have four places to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics. Besides Mong Tuyen and Thu Vinh in shooting, the remaining two places belong to cyclist Nguyen Thi That in the women's road cycling event and swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang in the men's 800m freestyle swimming event.
